✧ Mention of the prominent figures who died in this year. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū Bakr al-ʿUkbarī. He narrated from Abū Khalīfah al-Sājī and others, and he was reliable and trustworthy. He died in ʿUkbarā in Rajab of this year. Jaʿfar al-Ḍarīr, the Qurʾān reciter at Bāb al-Shām. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year, and he was reliable. Saʿīd b. Sallām, Abū ʿUthmān al-Maghribī. He was born in al-Qayrawān in a village called Karakant, and he met the shaykhs in Egypt, entered the lands of Syria, accompanied Abū al-Khayr al-Aqṭaʿ, and resided in Makkah for years. He would not appear during the pilgrimage seasons, and he had charismatic gifts. Abū Sulaymān al-Khaṭṭābī used to say: If there is anyone among the inspired in this age, it is Abū ʿUthmān. Abū Muslim Ghālib b. ʿAlī al-Rāzī says: I heard Abū ʿUthmān al-Maghribī say: I was in Baghdad, and I had pain in my knee until it descended to my bladder, and my pain intensified. I was calling upon Allah for relief, when one of the jinn called out to me: Why do you call upon Allah for relief, when His relief has not yet come? When I heard that, I raised my voice and increased my words until the people of the house heard my voice. It was not but an hour later that the urine came, and a vessel was brought to me into which water was poured. Then something came out of me with force and struck the middle of the vessel so that I heard its sound. It was a stone that had come out of my bladder, and the pain left me. So I said: How swift is the relief, and such is what is expected of Him. Abū ʿUthmān died in Naysābūr in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year, and he was buried next to Abū ʿUthmān al-Ḥīrī. Abū Muḥammad al-Aṣbahānī, known as al-Ẓarīf. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Māhīzadh, Abū Muḥammad al-Aṣbahānī, known as al-Ẓarīf. He came to Baghdad and narrated all his sessions there from memory in the presence of Ibn al-Muẓaffar and al-Dāraquṭnī. They both said: We never saw a book with him; he narrated to us only from memory, and we did not detect an error in anything from him, except that he narrated a hadith from Abū Yaʿlā about which there was some doubt in the heart. Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Wāsiṭī said: When I returned to Wāsiṭ, I informed him of it, and he brought out the hadith and its original in the handwriting of a youth. He died in this year.
