Translation

✧ Then the year 374 AH began. Mention of the return of the Daylamites to Mosul and the defeat of Bādh. When Bādh the Kurd seized control of Mosul, Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah and his vizier Ibn Saʿdān became concerned about his affair. The choice fell upon dispatching Zayyār b. Shahrakawayh, who was the greatest of their commanders. He ordered him to march to fight him, equipped him, and went to great lengths in his matter, increasing with him the men, equipment, and funds. He marched against Bādh, who came out to meet them and encountered them in Ṣafar of this year. The battle resulted in the defeat of Bādh and his companions, and many of his army and family were taken captive and carried to Baghdad, where they were paraded. The Daylamites took possession of Mosul. Zayyār sent an army with Saʿd al-Ḥājib in pursuit of Bādh. They took the route through Jazīrat Ibn ʿUmar. He sent another army to Naṣībīn, but they disagreed with their commanders and did not comply with them in marching against him. Bādh was in Diyār Bakr, having gathered a large number of men. The vizier of Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah wrote to Saʿd al-Dawlah b. Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān, offering to hand over Diyār Bakr to him. He sent an army there, but they had no strength against Bādh's followers, so they returned to Aleppo. They had besieged Mayyāfāriqīn. When Saʿd saw that from his army, he employed a stratagem to kill Bādh. He assigned a man for that purpose. The man entered Bādh's tent at night and struck him with a sword, thinking he was striking his head, but the blow fell upon his leg. He cried out, and the man fled. Bādh fell ill from that blow and was near death. He had gathered with him a great number of men. He corresponded with Zayyār and Saʿd seeking peace. The situation was settled between them, and they made peace on the condition that Diyār Bakr would belong to Bādh, along with half of Ṭūr ʿAbdīn. Zayyār then went down to Baghdad, and Saʿd remained in Mosul.
