✧ Appointment of Bakjūr the Turk over Damascus In this year al-ʿAzīz bi-llāh (the ʿAlid caliph) appointed over Damascus and its districts Bakjūr the Turk, the client of Qarghawayh, one of the ghulāms of Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān. He held Ḥimṣ, and he marched from there to Damascus. He wronged its people, treated them harshly, and conducted himself badly among them. We have mentioned him in the year two hundred and seventy-two [AH] at length. In it Abū Muḥammad ʿAlī b. al-ʿAbbās b. Fasānjis became vizier to Sharaf al-Dawlah. In it, in Rabīʿ I, a great star fell; the world was illuminated by it, and a sound like a loud thunder was heard from it. In it prices rose high in Iraq and the lands adjacent to it, and provisions became scarce, so many people died of hunger. In it Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. Saʿdān became vizier to Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah. In it the Qarāmiṭa came near Baghdad, emboldened by the death of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah; they were conciliated with money which they took and then withdrew. Among the events of this year: Making public the death of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah On the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, the tenth of Muḥarram, the death of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah was made public. His bier was carried to the martyrs of the West, and he was buried in a tomb built for him there. On his grave was written on a teak plaque: "This is the grave of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and Tāj al-Millah Abū Shujāʿ son of Rukn al-Dawlah. He loved the vicinity of this pious imam, hoping for deliverance on the day when every soul comes to plead for itself. Praise be to God, and may God bless our master Muḥammad and his pure progeny." His affair was undertaken and his bier carried by Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Isḥāq al-ʿAlawī the naqīb. Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah sat to receive condolences for him in black garments on the ground. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh came to console him, and there was loud, continuous wailing for many days in the houses and markets. When that was over, Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah rode to the palace of the caliphate on Saturday, seven nights remaining of the month. There he was invested with the seven robes of honor and the black turban; he was adorned with bracelets and a necklace and crowned; two banners were tied for him; he was titled Shams al-Millah; he was mounted on a horse with a saddle of gold, and led before him a similar one; his covenant was read, investing him with the affairs in all the territories reached by the call in all the kingdoms; he then went down to the Dār al-Mamlakah in a ṭayyār; the oath of allegiance was taken for him from all the governors to obey and be sincere in counsel; its customary marks were granted to him; and letters were written to the governors, officials, and those in charge of the provinces and frontiers to take the oath from the troops under their command. Price increases Prices increased excessively in this year, and a great famine afflicted the people. The price of wheat per kurr in Ramadan reached three thousand Tājī dirhams, and in Dhū al-Qaʿdah it reached four thousand eight hundred dirhams. The people clamored, broke the pulpits of the congregational mosques, and prevented prayer on several Fridays. Many weak people died of hunger on the road. Then prices decreased in Dhū al-Ḥijjah. The march of the Qarāmiṭa to Egypt In this year the Qarāmiṭa arrived at Baṣrah, because of the greed that arose in them after the death of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. They were conciliated with money that was given to them, and they departed.
