Translation

✧ Mention of the death of Yūsuf Bulukkīn and the succession of his son al-Manṣūr In this year, when seven nights remained of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, Yūsuf Bulukkīn b. Zīrī, the ruler of Ifrīqiyah, died at Wārqalīn. The reason for his going there was that Khazarūn al-Zanātī entered Sijilmāsah, expelled Yūsuf Bulukkīn's deputy from it, and plundered the wealth and equipment in it, while Zīrī b. ʿAṭiyyah al-Zanātī seized control of Fās. So Yūsuf set out for it, but fell ill on the way with colic. It was also said that a pustule appeared on his hand and he died from it. He bequeathed the succession to his son al-Manṣūr. Al-Manṣūr was in the city of Ashīr, so he sat to receive condolences for his father, and the people of al-Qayrawān and the rest of the regions came to him, offering condolences for his father and congratulating him on the succession. He treated the people kindly and said to them: "My father Yūsuf and my grandfather Zīrī used to take the people by the sword, but I will take them only by kindness. I am not one who is appointed by a letter and dismissed by a letter," meaning that the caliph in Egypt was unable to dismiss him by a letter. Then he went to al-Qayrawān and resided at Raqqādah. He took charge of the affairs, appointed the commanders, and sent a magnificent gift to al-ʿAzīz billāh in Egypt. It was said that its value was one million dinars. Then he returned to Ashīr, leaving as his deputy for the collection of revenues in al-Qayrawān, al-Mahdīyah, and all of Ifrīqiyah a man called ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Kātib.
