Translation
✧ Mention of Ibn Abī ʿĀmir’s campaign against the Franks in al-Andalus When the people of al-Andalus saw what the Ṣinhājah had done, they envied them and desired to engage in jihād. They said to al-Manṣūr b. Abī ʿĀmir: “These have made us eager for raiding.” So he gathered numerous armies from all regions and set out for jihād. During those nights he had seen in a dream as if a man gave him asparagus. He took it from his hand and ate some of it. He recounted it to Ibn Abī Jumʿah, who said to him: “Go forth to the land of Elyūn, for you will conquer it.” He said: “From where did you get this?” He said: “Because asparagus is called hilyawn in the East, and the angel of the dream said to you: ‘Hā lyūn.’” So he went out to it and encamped against it. It is one of their greatest cities. Its people sought help from the Franks, and they reinforced them with many armies. They fought night and day, and killing among them increased. The Ṣinhājah showed great endurance. Then a great count of the Franks, who had no equal among them, came out and roamed between the ranks, seeking single combat. Jalālah b. Zīrī al-Ṣinhājī went out to him. Each of them charged at the other. The Frank thrust at him, but he leaned away from the thrust and struck him with the sword on his shoulder, severing his shoulder. The Frank fell to the ground, and the Muslims charged at the Christians. They fled to their lands, and an uncountable number of them were killed (and he took possession of the city). Ibn Abī ʿĀmir gained immense booty the like of which had never been seen. The captives gathered numbered thirty thousand. He ordered the slain to be stacked one upon another, and he ordered a muezzin to call the maghrib prayer over the slain. He destroyed the city of Qāmūnah and returned safely with his armies.
