✧ Mention of the affair of Bādh al-Kurdī, the maternal uncle of the Banū Marwān, and his taking possession of al-Mawṣil In this year the affair of Bādh al-Kurdī became strong. His name was Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Dūstaka, and he was of the Ḥumaydī Kurds. The beginning of his affair was that he used to raid frequently at the frontiers of Diyār Bakr. He was of huge build, possessing might and severity. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah took possession of al-Mawṣil, he presented himself before him. When he saw ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, he feared him and said: 'I do not think he will spare me.' So he fled when he left his presence, and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah sought him after his departure to seize him, saying: 'He has might and severity, and in him there is evil, and it is permissible to spare the like of him?' Then he was informed of his flight, so he desisted from seeking him. He arrived at the frontiers of Diyār Bakr and stayed there until his affair grew great and he became strong. He took possession of Mayyāfāriqīn and much of Diyār Bakr after the death of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. Some of his companions reached Naṣībīn, and he seized it. So Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah dispatched armies against him with Abū Saʿd Bahrām b. Ardashīr. He fought him, and Bahrām was defeated and a group of his companions were taken captive. The affair of Bādh grew strong, so Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah sent to him Abū al-Qāsim Saʿd b. Muḥammad al-Ḥājib with a large army. They met at Bājulāyā on the Khābūr of al-Ḥusayniyyah, in the district of Kawāshā, and fought a fierce battle. Saʿd and his companions were defeated, and Bādh seized many of the Daylamites, killing and taking captives, then he killed the captives in cold blood. About this battle, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Bashnawī said: At Bājulāyā we cleared away from him his grief, while in the terror we are clearers of distresses. (meaning Bādh), (and we shall mention its reason in the year 432, God Almighty willing.) When Bādh had defeated the Daylamites and Saʿd, and had done to them what has been mentioned before, Saʿd preceded him and entered al-Mawṣil. Bādh marched in his tracks, and the common people rose up against Saʿd because of the bad conduct of the Daylamites among them, so he escaped from them with his own life. Bādh entered al-Mawṣil and seized it, and his power grew strong. He told himself he would take Baghdad and remove the Daylamites from it, and he went beyond the limit of the extremists and became counted among the possessors of the outlying regions. So Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah feared him, and his affair troubled him and distracted him from everything else. He gathered armies to send against him, and the year came to an end. One of our friends among the Ḥumaydī Kurds, who is concerned with the reports of Bādh, told me that Bādh's kunyah is Abū Shujāʿ, and his name is Bādh, and that Abū ʿAbd Allāh is al-Ḥusayn b. Dūstaka, who is the brother of Bādh. The beginning of his affair was that he used to tend sheep, and he was generous and munificent. He would slaughter his sheep and feed the people, so the name of liberality became manifest from him. People gathered around him, and he began to cut the road. Whenever he obtained anything, he spent it, so his following grew large. He began to raid. Then he entered Armenia and took possession of the city of Arjīsh, which was the first city he possessed. He became strong there, and marched from there to Diyār Bakr and took possession of the city of Āmid, then took possession of the city of Mayyāfāriqīn and others in Diyār Bakr. He marched to al-Mawṣil and took possession of it, as we have mentioned.
