✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Isḥāq b. Saʿd b. al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān [Abū Yaʿqūb] al-Nasawī He narrated from his grandfather al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān and Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzaymah. Al-Dāraquṭnī made a selection from him, and he was trustworthy and reliable. He died on the road to Khurasan on his return from the pilgrimage. Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Khallāl He was trustworthy, of upright conduct, and good condition. He died in Ramaḍān of this year. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Hibat Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Muhtadī billāh, Abū Aḥmad al-Hāshimī He narrated from al-Ḥusayn b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAyyāsh al-Qaṭṭān. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Azjī narrated from him. He died on Friday night, four nights remaining of Shawwāl of this year. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Tamīm, Abū Naṣr al-Sarkhasī He came to Baghdad and narrated there from Muḥammad b. Idrīs al-Shāmī and Aḥmad b. Isḥāq al-Sarkhasī. Ibn Rizqawayh and others narrated from him, and he was trustworthy. Muḥammad [b. Jaʿfar] b. Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. al-Ḥasan b. Wahb, Abū Bakr al-Ḥarīrī al-muʿaddal, known as the husband of al-Ḥurrah. He heard Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī, al-Baghawī, Ibn Abī Dāwūd, and al-ʿAbbās b. Yūsuf al-Shaklī. Ibn Rizqawayh, al-Barqānī, and Ibn Shādhān narrated from him. Al-Barqānī said: He is a great Baghdadi, one of the trustworthy notaries. Al-Amīr Abū al-Faḍl Jaʿfar [b.] al-Muktafī billāh said: The daughter of Badr, the mawlā of al-Muʿtaḍid, was the wife of the Commander of the Faithful al-Muqtadir billāh. She remained with him for years, and he honored her greatly and bestowed immense favor upon her. Thus her condition was established, and that was added to the great inherited wealth she had. Al-Muqtadir was killed, but she escaped the calamity, and all her wealth and treasures remained safe with her, so that nothing was lost. She left the palace, and a young man named Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar used to enter her kitchen carrying something on his head. He was active, so he would present himself to the stewardess for service, and they advanced him until he became the kitchen agent. His news reached her and she saw him, so she returned to him the agency outside the kitchen, and his affair progressed until he came to oversee her estates and properties. He gained influence over her until she would speak to him from behind a curtain and a closed door, and his special position with her increased until he took hold of her heart. She summoned him to marry her, but he did not dare do that, so she emboldened him and gave him wealth until that was accomplished for her. His condition had already been established through her, and when she wanted that from him, she gave him wealth that he made a manifest blessing for himself, so that her guardians would not prevent her from him due to his poverty and because he was not a suitable match. Then she bribed the judges with magnificent gifts until they married her to him. The guardians objected, but she overcame them with rulings and dirhams, and that was accomplished for him and her. He remained with her for years, then she died, and he obtained from her wealth about three hundred thousand dinars, and he has been disposing of it until now. My father said: I myself saw this man, and he was a sensible elder, an accepted witness. He reached by means of wealth the point that Abū al-Sāʾib the judge accepted him, so that he confirmed in his hand the endowments of al-Ḥurrah and her will, because she had appointed him as executor over her wealth and endowments. He is still known only as the husband of al-Ḥurrah. She was called al-Ḥurrah because of her marriage to al-Muqtadir, and such is the custom of the caliphs, due to the dominance of the mamlūks over them: if they had a wife, she was called al-Ḥurrah. Ibn Thābit said: Abū ʿAlī b. Shādhān said to us: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, the husband of al-Ḥurrah, was our neighbor, and I heard from him sessions of his dictations. In his hadith session were present al-Qāḍī al-Jarrāḥī, Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ẓufr, al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Ḥayyawayh, and other shaykhs. He died on Friday night and was buried on Friday, four nights having passed of Ṣafar of this year. He was buried near the grave of Maʿrūf al-Karkhī, and I attended with my father the prayer over him. Manṣūr b. Aḥmad b. Hārūn the jurist, Abū Ṣādiq He heard from a group but never narrated. He was among the ascetics who fled from positions of leadership, and he composed ascetic poetry. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year at the age of sixty-five. In this year died the chief of the nuqabāʾ, Abū Tammām al-Zaynabī, and after him his son Abū al-Ḥasan assumed the niqābah.
