Translation
✧ Then the year 373 AH began Mention of the death of Muʾayyid al-Dawlah and the return of Fakhr al-Dawlah to his kingdom In this year, in Shaʿbān, Muʾayyid al-Dawlah Abū Manṣūr Buwayh b. Rukn al-Dawlah died in Jurjān. His illness was quinsy. Al-Ṣāḥib b. ʿAbbād said to him: “If only you would appoint someone as successor.” He said: “I am too preoccupied for this,” and he did not appoint anyone to the kingship. His age was forty-three years. Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah sat in mourning in Baghdādh, and al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh came to him to console him, meeting him in a flyboat. When Muʾayyid al-Dawlah died, the leading men of his state consulted about who should take his place. Al-Ṣāḥib Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbbād advised restoring Fakhr al-Dawlah to his kingdom, since he was the eldest of the house and had possessed those lands before Muʾayyid al-Dawlah, and because he had the marks of command and kingship. So he wrote to him and summoned him, while he was in Nīsābūr, and al-Ṣāḥib sent someone to act as his own deputy. In the meantime, he set up Khusraw Fīrūz b. Rukn al-Dawlah so that the people would be calm until the arrival of Fakhr al-Dawlah. When the news reached Fakhr al-Dawlah, he traveled to Jurjān. The army met him with obedience, and he sat on the royal throne in Ramaḍān without obligation to anyone. Glory be to Him who, when He wills a thing, it is. When he returned to his kingdom, al-Ṣāḥib said to him: “O my master, God has brought you to your goal and has brought me in your service what I hoped for. Among the rights of my service to you is that you grant my request to leave military service and remain in my house, devoting myself to the command of God.” He said: “Do not say this, for I desire the kingship only for you, and no affair of mine is set right except through you. If you dislike involvement in affairs, I would dislike it too and would withdraw.” He kissed the ground and said: “The matter is yours.” So he made him his vizier, honored him, and exalted him, and acted according to his opinion in great and small matters. Robes of honor and the covenant were sent from the caliph to Fakhr al-Dawlah, and Fakhr al-Dawlah and Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah came to an agreement, becoming one hand.
