✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Ismāʿīl b. al-ʿAbbās, Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī al-Jurjānī He sought ḥadīth and traveled. He said—meaning Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī: When the news of the death of Muḥammad b. Ayyūb al-Rāzī arrived, I entered the house and wept and cried out and tore my shirt and put dust on my head. My family gathered and said, "What has befallen you?" I said, "The death of Muḥammad b. Ayyūb has been announced to me. You prevented me from journeying [to him], so permit me to go out, and let my maternal uncle accompany me to Nasā to al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān." I had no strength left in me. So I arrived and read to him the Musnad and other works. That was the beginning of my travels in pursuit of ḥadīth. Al-Ismāʿīlī had abundant knowledge of transmission, and he composed a book on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. Yaḥyā b. Thābit b. Bundār related it to us from his father, from al-Barqānī, from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī used to say: More than once I resolved to travel to Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī, but I was not granted the means. Al-Ismāʿīlī died on Saturday, the first of Rajab in the year 371, at the age of ninety-four. Al-Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ, Abū Muḥammad al-Sabīʿī He heard Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī and Qāsim al-Muṭarriz. Al-Dāraquṭnī and al-Barqānī related from him. He was trustworthy, a ḥāfiẓ, and prolific, but he was difficult in transmission. Toward the end of his life he resolved to hold sessions of ḥadīth and dictation in a public gathering. He prepared for that, and nothing remained except fixing the day of the session, but he died. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Thābit said: Al-Qāḍī Abū al-ʿAlāʾ Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Wāsiṭī said to us: I saw Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī sitting before Abū Muḥammad al-Sabīʿī like the sitting of a boy before his teacher, out of awe of him. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shāhid, known as Ibn al-Bādā Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Haytham b. Ṭahmān, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shāhid, known as Ibn al-Bādā. He was born in the year 274. He heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlawayh and Shuʿayb b. Muḥammad al-Dhāriʿ. His age was ninety-seven years, of which he spent the last fifteen years bedridden and blind. He died in Rajab of this year. Al-Ḥasan b. Yūsuf b. Yaḥyā, Abū Muʿādh al-Bustī Al-Barqānī related from him, and he was trustworthy. Ibn Abī al-Fawāris said: He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. He was trustworthy, upright, of good doctrine. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. Jaʿfar b. Bunyān, Abū al-Ḥusayn, known as al-Zaynabī He was born in Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 278. He lived at Birkat Zulzul. He related from al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlawayh and al-Firyābī. Al-Barqānī and al-Tanūkhī related from him. He was trustworthy. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad, Abū Bakr al-Ḍabbī al-Qāḍī He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥusayn, Abū Bakr al-Qāḍī, heard most of his father's ḥadīth and wrote from Abū Bakr al-Naysābūrī and others. He related ḥadīth. The Commander of the Faithful al-Muttaqī appointed him judge over Āmid, Arzan, Mayyāfāriqīn, and the surrounding areas in the year 329. Then al-Muttaqī also appointed him in the year 331 as judge over the road to Mosul, Quṭrubbul, Maskan, and elsewhere. Al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh appointed him in the year 334 over Mosul and its districts, and the judiciary of al-Ḥadīthah and what adjoins it. Then al-Muṭīʿ also appointed him judge over Aleppo, Antioch, and their districts. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ appointed him judge over Diyār Bakr, Āmid, Arzan, Mayyāfāriqīn, Armenia, and their districts. He was chaste, upright, and a jurist. He died in this year. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥārith b. Asad b. al-Layth, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Tamīmī He related from Abū Bakr b. Ziyād al-Naysābūrī, al-Qāḍī al-Muḥāmilī, Muḥammad b. Makhlad al-Dūrī, Nifṭawayh, and others. He died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. He said: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Tamīmī was a man of great standing. He had writings on disputed questions and a work on usūl and farāʾiḍ. The compiler said: Al-Khaṭīb was biased against him, for such is his manner with the companions of Aḥmad. He reported from Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. ʿAlī al-Asadī al-ʿUkbarī that al-Tamīmī fabricated a ḥadīth. But this al-ʿUkbarī's word is not to be relied upon, for he was not a man of ḥadīth or learning; he only knew something of Arabic grammar and did not relate any ḥadīth. This was mentioned about him by al-Khaṭīb. He was also a Muʿtazilī who said that the disbelievers will not abide in the Fire forever. It is from him that the attack on Ibn Baṭṭah is also reported. The disparagement of this al-Asadī will come in full in the biography of Ibn Baṭṭah. This al-Asadī was full of hatred for the companions of Aḥmad and attacked their leading figures, and al-Khaṭīb would present them falsely whenever he wished, with cold partisanship. For when he mentions the speculative theologians among the innovators, he magnifies those people and attributes to them what verges on the impossible. He mentioned from Ibn al-Labbān that he said, "I memorized the Qurʾān when I was five years old." He reported from Ibn Rizqawayh that al-Tamīmī inserted two ḥadīths into the Musnad of Aḥmad. Yet it is possible that he had written in some of the musnads from another musnad or from what he had heard from other than that musnad. When a matter admits of possibility, it is not permissible to charge a person with lying. We seek refuge with Allah from corrupt motives, for they turn back upon their owner. ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥuṣarī al-Ṣūfī al-Wāʿiẓ Of Basran origin, he lived in Baghdad. He was the shaykh of the Sufis. He accompanied al-Shiblī and others. It reached me that when he grew old and it became difficult for him to come to the mosque, a ribāṭ was built for him opposite the Mosque of al-Manṣūr. It later became known by the name of its patron al-Zawzanī. Al-Ḥuṣarī would go out only from one Friday to the next, and he had discourse in their manner. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar al-Baghdādī said: I heard Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥuṣarī, and I heard him say: I find that one who calls people calls upon Allah with his outward self, but calls to himself with his inward self, because he loves to be magnified, pointed to, have his position known, and have good praise bestowed upon him. When he loves creation's love for him and their veneration of him, he has called them to himself, not to his Lord. And he said: What is ʿAlī from me? What do I have in myself that I should fear for it or hope for it? If He shows mercy, He shows mercy to what is His; if He punishes, He punishes what is His! Al-Ḥuṣarī died on Friday in Baghdad in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year, having passed eighty. He was buried in the cemetery of Bāb Ḥarb. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad, al-Aḥdab the forger He would imitate anyone's handwriting, so that the man upon whom a document was forged would not doubt that it was his own handwriting. People were afflicted by him with great affliction. The sultan placed a seal on his hand many times. He died on Sunday, the ninth of Rajab of this year. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Rawḥ, Abū Bakr al-Ḥarīrī He heard Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Zaynabī. Regarding Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Ḥarīrī—and I asked about him—he said: Trustworthy and virtuous. Ibn Thābit said: I was told from Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās b. al-Furāt, who said: Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Rawḥ died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 371. He was upright and trustworthy. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, Abū Zayd al-Marwazī al-Faqīh He heard Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Saʿdī and others. He was one of the imams of the Muslims, a memorizer of the Shāfiʿī school, of sound judgment, and renowned for asceticism and piety. He came to Baghdad and related ḥadīth there. Al-Dāraquṭnī heard from him. Regarding Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Nuʿaym al-Naysābūrī, who said: I heard Abū Bakr al-Bazzāz say: I accompanied the faqīh Abū Zayd from Naysābūr to Makkah, and I do not know that the angels recorded a single sin against him. Abū Nuʿaym said: Abū Zayd died in Marw on Friday, the third of Rajab of this year. Muḥammad b. Khalaf b. Jayyān—with jīm—Abū Bakr al-Faqīh Al-Barqānī, al-Tanūkhī, and others related from him. He was trustworthy. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. Muḥammad b. Khafīf, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shīrāzī He accompanied al-Jurayrī, Ibn ʿAṭāʾ, and others. In my book titled Talbīs Iblīs, I have related from him stories that indicate he followed the doctrine of ibāḥah.
