Translation

✧ Then the year 372 AH began. Mention of Bakjūr's governorship of Damascus. We have mentioned in the year 366 [AH] the appointment of Bakjūr to Homs by Abū al-Maʿālī b. Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān. When he took charge of it, he rebuilt it, for the land of Damascus had been ruined by the Arabs and the people of disorder and corruption during the period of Qassām's domination over it, and its people had moved to the districts of Homs, so it flourished, and its inhabitants and its produce increased. Famine and dearth occurred in Damascus, so Bakjūr transported provisions from Homs to it, and people moved back and forth carrying produce, guarding the roads and protecting them. He corresponded with al-ʿAzīz bi-llāh in Egypt and sought to draw near to him, and he promised him the governorship of Damascus. It remained thus until this year. An estrangement occurred between Saʿd al-Dawlah Abū al-Maʿālī b. Sayf al-Dawlah and Bakjūr, so Saʿd al-Dawlah sent ordering him to leave his land. Bakjūr sent to al-ʿAzīz bi-llāh requesting the fulfillment of what he had promised him of the emirate of Damascus. The vizier Ibn Killis had been preventing al-ʿAzīz from appointing him until this point. The commander Yaltakīn had taken charge of Damascus after Qassām, as we have mentioned, and he was residing there. The Maghāribah in Egypt gathered to attack the vizier Ibn Killis and kill him, so necessity compelled him to summon Yaltakīn from Damascus. Al-ʿAzīz ordered him to come and to hand over Damascus to Bakjūr. He said: "If Bakjūr takes charge of it, he will rebel there." But his words were not heeded, and he sent to Yaltakīn ordering him to head to Egypt and hand over Damascus to Bakjūr. He did so, and Bakjūr entered it in Rajab of this year as its governor. He behaved badly toward the supporters of the vizier Ibn Killis and those attached to him, to the extent that he crucified some of them. He did the same to the people of the city and oppressed the people. He was never without taking money, killing, crucifying, and punishing. He remained thus until the year 378 AH.
