✧ Mention of several events In this year a fire occurred at al-Karkh in Baghdādh, and many places therein were burned, in which a great number of people perished, and the fire lasted a week. In it ʿAḍud al-Dawlah seized the qāḍī Abū ʿAlī al-Muḥsin b. ʿAlī al-Tanūkhī, confined him to his house, and removed him from the offices he had been administering. He was of the Ḥanafī legal school, extremely bigoted against al-Shāfiʿī, and he let his tongue loose concerning him—may God fight him! In it ʿAḍud al-Dawlah released Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Hilāl al-Ṣābiʾ the scribe. His arrest had been in the year 367 [AH]. The reason for his arrest was that he had been writing letters on behalf of Bakhtiyār concerning the dispute that occurred between him and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, in which he was advising his patron. Among what he wrote on behalf of the Caliph al-Ṭāʾiʿ to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah on the matter, when ʿIzz al-Dawlah had been entitled Shāhinshāh, he shifted away from the norms of equality toward him, and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah resented that. This is one of the strangest things, for it would have been proper for him to esteem him more highly for his advice to his patron. When he released him, he ordered him to compose a book comprising their history and its merits, so he composed al-Tājī on the Daylamite dynasty. In it ʿAḍud al-Dawlah sent the qāḍī Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. al-Ṭayyib al-Ashʿarī, known as Ibn al-Bāqillānī, to the king of the Byzantines in reply to a letter that had arrived from him. When he reached the king, he was told to kiss the ground before him, but he did not do so. It was said: 'There is no way to enter except with kissing the ground,' but he persisted in refusing. So the king made a small door through which the qāḍī would enter stooping, so as to make those present think that he had kissed the ground. When the qāḍī saw the door, he realized that, so he turned his back to it and entered through it. When he passed through it, he faced the king while standing, and his standing was magnified in their eyes. In it the ʿAḍudī hospital was opened, west of Baghdādh, and everything it needed in the way of medicines was transferred to it. Among the events in it: ʿAḍud al-Dawlah ordered the digging of a canal from the pillar of al-Khāliṣ and the conducting of water to the garden of his residence. Work on that began, and men were gathered for its construction. Also, on the prow of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's pleasure boat there was an image of a lion made of silver. It was stolen in Ṣafar. People wondered how this could happen given ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's extreme awe and his severe punishment of the least offense. Then the ground was turned over in search of its thief, but no trace of him was found. It is said that the ruler of Egypt secretly sent someone who did this. In Dhū al-Qaʿdah: Abū al-Qāsim ʿĪsā b. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā was invested with the chancery of al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh, and a robe of honor was bestowed upon him.
