Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Aḥmad b. ʿAlī, Abū Bakr al-Rāzī The jurist, imam of the people of opinion in his time, was famous for asceticism and piety. He came to Baghdad in his youth and studied jurisprudence under Abū al-Ḥasan al-Karkhī, and he continued until leadership came to him, and students of jurisprudence traveled to him. He was addressed about assuming the office of chief judge, but he refused. The address was repeated to him, but he did not do it. He has many works, among which are hadiths he narrated from Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm, Sulaymān al-Ṭabarānī, and others. Abū Bakr al-Abharī said: Al-Muṭīʿ addressed me about the chief judgeship, and the intermediary in that was Abū al-Ḥasan b. Abī ʿAmr [al-Sharābī]. I refused him and pointed to Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Rāzī. He brought the address about that, and Abū al-Ḥasan b. Abī ʿAmr asked me to help him with it. He was addressed, but he refused. I was alone with him, and he said: You advise me to do that. I said: I do not think that is right for you. Then we rose before Abū al-Ḥasan [b.] Abī ʿAmr, and he repeated his address, and I returned to helping him. He said to me: Did I not consult you and you advised me not to do it? Abū al-Ḥasan b. Abī ʿAmr was abashed at that and said: You point us to a man, then you advise him not to do it. I said: Yes. Do I not have in that a model in Mālik b. Anas? He advised the people of Madinah to put forward Nāfiʿ the reciter in the mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he advised Nāfiʿ not to accept. He was asked about that, and he said: I advised you to Nāfiʿ because I knew no one like him, and I advised him not to do it because he would gain enemies and enviers. Likewise, I advised you to him because I know no one like him, and I advised him not to do it because it is safer for his religion. Al-Ṣaymarī said: Abū Bakr al-Rāzī died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 370, and Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. Mūsā al-Khuwārizmī prayed over him. Al-Zubayr b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b.
