Translation
✧ The death of ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Aḥdab, the forger In this year died ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Aḥdab, the forger. He would write in the hand of anyone, so that the person on whose behalf he wrote would not doubt that it was his own writing. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah wanted to cause strife among the kings, he would order him to write to him in the hand of one of them, agreeing to [move against] the one between whom he wished to corrupt the situation. Then he would arrange for the letter to reach him, and the situation would be corrupted. This al-Aḥdab sometimes had his hand cut off for this reason. The increase of the Euphrates River In this year the Euphrates increased with a great rise, exceeding its usual level, and much of the crops were flooded. The al-Ṣarāh canal overflowed, and its old and new bridges were destroyed. The people of the western side of Baghdādh were on the verge of drowning. The rise remained in it and in the Tigris for three months, then it receded. The wedding procession of the daughter of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah to the Caliph al-Ṭāʾiʿ In this year the daughter of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah was escorted in procession to the Caliph al-Ṭāʾiʿ, and with her was an incalculable amount of jewels. A gift from the ruler of Yemen to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah In this year a gift arrived for ʿAḍud al-Dawlah from the ruler of Yemen, containing a single piece of ambergris weighing fifty-six raṭls. Who led the people in pilgrimage this year Abū al-Fatḥ Aḥmad b. ʿUmar b. Yaḥyā al-ʿAlawī led the people in pilgrimage, and he gave the sermon in Makkah and Madinah for al-ʿAzīz billāh, the ʿAlawī ruler of Egypt. Al-Muṭīʿ riding to Muʿizz al-Dawlah to console him on his sister's death Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ḥājib al-Nuʿmān said: It was not customary for the caliphs to go out to meet any of the commanders. However, when Fāṭimah, the sister of Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn, died, al-Muṭīʿ rode to Muʿizz al-Dawlah to console him. Muʿizz al-Dawlah dismounted, kissed the ground before him, and expressed profuse thanks. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah came to Baghdādh the last time, taking control of affairs there, he sent Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-ʿAlawī from his camp as an envoy to the court of al-Ṭāʾiʿ. He arrived at the gate of the caliphal palace at midnight and sent word that he had come on an important matter. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ sat for him and admitted him. He said: "O our master, Commander of the Faithful, this king has arrived, and he is one of the foremost kings, ranking with the great Chosroes. He hopes from our master a distinction over those who preceded him and the honor of a reception that will demonstrate your good opinion of him." Al-Ṭāʾiʿ said: "We hold him in esteem, are resolved in his favor, and volunteer this before being asked. Inform him of that." Ibn Ḥājib al-Nuʿmān said: Al-Ṭāʾiʿ had no intention of doing so and had not planned it, because he knew he could not refuse; so he preferred to make it a favor initiated by himself. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: I returned to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah immediately and informed him of what had happened, and he was pleased. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ went out the next day and met him on the Tigris. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: ʿAḍud al-Dawlah said to me, "This is a service you have performed well. One other remains, for which we know no one but you: preventing the common people from meeting us with supplications and shouting." I said, "O our master, you are entering the city whose people's hearts long for you, and then you want them to be silent?!" He said, "We know no one capable of restraining them but you!" The people of Baghdādh had once met him with insolent words, so he did not want those tongues to pray for him. He said: So I summoned the police and said, "The king has commanded such-and-such, and he has threatened that anyone who does the opposite will be beheaded." They spread this among the common people and frightened anyone who spoke with death. Then ʿAḍud al-Dawlah passed through and saw things as he wished. He was amazed at the obedience of the common people to Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and said, "These are many times our army, and they obey him. If he intended evil against us, it would be possible." He saw in the daybook one million three hundred thousand dirhams in the name of Muḥammad b. ʿUmar from what he had paid from his transactions, so he arrested him and seized his wealth. The arrest and killing of al-Ṣaydalāwī Al-Ṣaydalāwī was a highwayman. One of the governors plotted against him by sending to him a group of vagabonds who pretended to join him. When they mingled with him, they seized him and carried him as a prisoner to al-Kūfah, where he was killed and his head was carried to Baghdādh.
