✧ Account of the war between the army of al-ʿAzīz and Ibn Jarrāḥ, and the dismissal of Qassām from Damascus In this year, armies were dispatched from Egypt to fight al-Mufarrij b. Jarrāḥ. The reason for that was that Ibn Jarrāḥ had grown great in the land of Palestine, his gathering had become numerous, his power had strengthened, and he had gone to extremes in ravaging, corruption, and ruining the lands. So al-ʿAzīz billāh equipped the armies and sent them out, placing over them the commander Yaltakīn al-Turkī. He marched to al-Ramla, and there gathered to him from the Arabs, from Qays and others, a great host. With Ibn Jarrāḥ was a body of men who shot with arrows and fought like the Turks. They met and battle was joined between them. Yaltakīn set an ambush, which came out upon Ibn Jarrāḥ's army from behind their backs when the fighting was at its fiercest, and they were routed, and the swords of the Egyptians took them. Ibn Jarrāḥ fled defeated to Antioch and sought the protection of its lord, who granted him refuge. It happened that the king of the Byzantines had come out of Constantinople with mighty armies seeking the lands of Islam, so Ibn Jarrāḥ became afraid and wrote to Bakjūr in Homs and sought refuge with him. As for the Egyptian army, they encamped before Damascus, deceiving Qassām. They showed him nothing except that they had come to set the country right and to restrain the hands that were reaching out to harm. The commander Abū Maḥmūd had died in the year 370 AH while he was governor of the city, but he had no authority; rather, the authority belonged to Qassām. When he died, Jaysh b. al-Ṣamṣāma, the son of Abū Maḥmūd's sister, rose after him in the governorship. He went out to Yaltakīn, thinking that he wanted to set the country right, so Yaltakīn ordered him to go out with those with him and camp outside the city, and they did so. He warned Qassām and ordered those with him to engage in battle. They fought several times, and Yaltakīn's army grew stronger, entered the outskirts of the city, took possession of al-Shāghūr, and burned and plundered. The elders of the city gathered before Qassām and spoke to him about going out to Yaltakīn and obtaining a safe-conduct for themselves and for him. He was abandoned and humbled, and submitted after his tyranny and arrogance, and said: Do whatever you wish. Qassām's companions returned to him and found him afraid, his hand fallen. Each one looked out for himself. The elders of the city went out to Yaltakīn and sought from him a safe-conduct for themselves and for Qassām. He granted it to them and said: I want to take over the city today. They said: Do as you are commanded. So he sent a governor called Ibn Khaṭlakh, with him cavalry and infantry. The beginning of this war and siege was in Muḥarram of the year 370 AH, when ten nights remained of it, and the entry into the city was when three nights remained of it. No one molested Qassām or any of his companions. Qassām stayed in the city for two days, then went into hiding, and they seized everything in his house and what was around it from the houses of his companions and others. Then he went out to the tents and made for Yaltakīn's chamberlain and made himself known to him. He seized him and carried him to Yaltakīn, and Yaltakīn carried him to Egypt. Then al-ʿAzīz released him, and the people were relieved of his tyranny over them and his domination by means of those youths who followed him, from the people of ravaging and corruption.
