Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Maḥmawayh, Abū al-Qāsim al-Naṣrābādhī al-Naysābūrī: He was affiliated with Naṣrābādh in Naysābūr, which is one of its quarters, as were Abū Naṣr al-Naṣrābādhī the jurist and a group. There is another called Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Naṣrābādhī, affiliated with Naṣrābādh of al-Rayy, a man of great standing who transmitted ḥadīth. As for Abū al-Qāsim, he heard much ḥadīth from a group, among them Makḥūl al-Bayrūtī, and he was trustworthy and knowledgeable in ḥadīth. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, and Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Wāsiṭī transmitted from him. He accompanied al-Shiblī, resided as a neighbor in Makkah, and died there in this year. Bakhtiyār Abū Manṣūr al-Malik ʿIzz al-Dawlah b. Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abī al-Ḥusayn [Aḥmad] b. Buwayh: He ruled after his father's death. He was the finest of people and the strongest in body and heart. He would wrestle a sturdy bull to the ground with his own hands, without helpers or ropes, seizing its legs and throwing it down until it could be slaughtered. In strength of heart he was on a great level, contending with lions in his hunting grounds. Al-Muṭīʿ invested him with the robe of honor, placed the collar and bracelets on him, and wrote his patent. Then his cousin ʿAḍud al-Dawlah coveted the kingdom of Baghdad and contended with him, and he killed Bakhtiyār. His age at that time was thirty-six years, and the duration of his emirate was eleven years and some months. Abū Muḥammad al-Bundār: ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī Samurah, Abū Muḥammad al-Bundār, of Baghawī origin. He heard al-Bāghandī. Al-Barqānī transmitted from him and said: "Trustworthy and reliable, with knowledge and memory." He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. ʿUthmān b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad, Abū Yaʿlā al-Warrāq, known as al-Ṭūsī: He heard al-Baghawī and Ibn Abī Dāwūd. Al-Barqānī transmitted from him and said: "He possessed knowledge and virtue, with compilations and collections, and he was trustworthy." He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh [b. Naṣr b. Bujayr] Abū Ṭāhir al-Dhuhlī al-Qāḍī: He was born in the year 299. He heard Abū Shuʿayb al-Ḥarrānī, Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb, Thaʿlab, and others. He served as judge in Wāsiṭ, then in Madīnat al-Manṣūr and in al-Sharqiyyah. He followed the school of Mālik. He transmitted ḥadīth in Baghdad, and al-Dāraquṭnī heard from him. He was trustworthy. Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī al-Khaṭbī said: "Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUmar b. Muḥammad the judge was dismissed from the judgeship of Madīnat al-Manṣūr, and Abū Ṭāhir was appointed in his place. He gave testimony before the chief judge ʿUmar b. Muḥammad, who favored him, then appointed him judge of Wāsiṭ until ʿUmar died. He remained in that post for a time, then Bajkam dismissed him when he entered Wāsiṭ, and he suffered misfortune. He went to Baghdad and stayed in his house. Then he was appointed judge of the city and its districts. He was of good conduct and commendable affairs." Al-Ṣūrī said: "Abū Ṭāhir was a judge in Egypt and died there in the year 367. He sought to be excused from the judgeship before his death." Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Yaqṭīn, Abū Jaʿfar al-Bazzāz: He heard Abū Khalīfah al-Faḍl b. al-Ḥubāb, Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, al-Bāghandī, and al-Baghawī. He traveled and wrote in the Jazīrah, Syria, and other lands, and transmitted extensively. He was truthful and understanding. Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī and others transmitted from him. Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt said: "Abū Jaʿfar was trustworthy. The ḥāfiẓ ʿUmar al-Baṣarī, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, and al-Dāraquṭnī selected ḥadīth from him." He died on Wednesday and was buried on Thursday, the twenty-fourth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Bakr al-Qāḍī, known as Ibn Qurayʿah: He transmitted from Abū Bakr Ibn al-Anbārī, but no musnad of ḥadīth is known from him. He was quick-witted, producing rhymed prose naturally without deliberation. Abū al-Sāʾib ʿUtbah b. ʿUbayd Allāh the judge appointed him judge of al-Sindiyyah and other districts of the Euphrates. One day he walked with Ibn Maʿrūf the judge, and they entered an alley. He lagged behind, then said to Ibn Maʿrūf: "If I go ahead, there is a doorkeeper; if I fall behind, it is a duty." One day a donkey with a rider jostled him, and he said: "O Creator of night and day, grant patience upon humiliation and abasement. How many a noble steed is without a donkey, And how many a donkey is upon a donkey." Abū Saʿīd al-Samarqandī said: "There was in Baghdad a military commander nicknamed al-Kīnā, whose kunyah was Abū Isḥāq. He used to address Ibn Qurayʿah as 'the judge.' One day, in conversation, he slipped and said to Ibn Qurayʿah: 'O Abū Bakr!' Ibn Qurayʿah replied: 'At your service, O Abū Isḥāq!' The commander said: 'O man, I only called you Abū Bakr when you served as our judge; if you call me by kunyah, we are crushed.' The commander said: 'Woe! This is more disgraceful than the first.'" Among his poetry: "I have a stratagem against him who slanders, But against the liar there is no stratagem. Whoever fabricates what he says, My stratagem against him is feeble." Ibn Qurayʿah died on Saturday night, with ten nights remaining in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year, at the age of sixty-five.
