Then the year 367 AH began

✧ Mention of several events In it there appeared in Ifrīqiyah in the sky a redness between the east and the north, like the flame of fire, so the people went out calling upon God Almighty and humbling themselves before Him. And in al-Mahdīyah there were earthquakes and terrors that lasted forty days, until its people abandoned their homes and surrendered their possessions. In it al-ʿAzīz billāh al-ʿAlawī, the ruler of Egypt and Ifrīqiyah, dispatched an amīr over the pilgrimage season to lead the people in the ḥajj, and the khuṭbah was for him in Makkah, and the amīr over the season was Bādīs b. Zīrī, the brother of Yūsuf Bulukkīn, his deputy in Ifrīqiyah. When he reached Makkah, the thieves there came to him and said: "We will guarantee you the season for fifty thousand dirhams, and you will not interfere with us." He said to them: "I will do that. Gather your associates to me so that the contract may be with all of you." They gathered and were more than thirty men. He said: "Is there anyone of you remaining?" They swore that none of them remained. Then he cut off the hands of all of them. In it the qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. Aḥmad was invested with the robe of honour at al-Rayy, and he took charge of the judiciary there and in the lands under the rule of Muʾayyid al-Dawlah. He was one of the imāms of the Muʿtazilah, and in the notices of his works he is mentioned as Qāḍī al-Quḍāt, meaning by that the qāḍī of the qāḍīs of the districts of al-Rayy. Some who do not know that suppose him to be Qāḍī al-Quḍāt absolutely, but it is not so. ʿIzz al-Dawlah's crossing to the western side on the bridge of ʿUqdah In Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, ʿIzz al-Dawlah crossed over to the western side on the bridge of ʿUqdah and entered Quṭrubbul. His Daylamites dispersed from him, and the vanguard of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's men entered. Then ʿAḍud al-Dawlah alighted in tents at al-Shafīʿī, and al-Ṭāʾiʿ went out to meet him, and the decorated domed tents were pitched, and he entered the city. Then ʿAḍud al-Dawlah went out with al-Ṭāʾiʿ to fight ʿIzz al-Dawlah Bakhtiyār. When he was about to leave, Abū ʿAlī al-Fārisī entered upon him and said to him: "What is your view concerning accompanying us?" He said: "I am one of the men of supplication, not of meeting. May God choose for the king in his resolve and make his purpose successful in his setting out, and make well-being his provision and victory his aim and the angels his helpers." Then he began to recite: I bade him farewell where no soul bids him farewell, but it travels with him. Then he turned away, and in the heart for him is a narrow place, and in the tears a wide expanse. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah said to him: "God bless you. How can I trust in your obedience and be certain of the purity of your inner self, when one of our shaykhs in Fārs recited to us: They said to him when he travelled by his side, so they exchanged nearness for distance. By God, the departure of a traveller is not far, who travels from the eye to the heart." Abū ʿAlī invoked blessings upon him and said: "Permit our master the transmission of these two verses." He gave him permission, and he dictated them from him. When he went out for battle, they met, and ʿIzz al-Dawlah was taken captive and killed. Then after that ʿAḍud al-Dawlah rode to the palace of al-Ṭāʾiʿ lillāh on Sunday, nine nights having passed of Jumādā al-Ūlā, with him the various kinds of troops, the nobles, the qāḍīs, the notaries, the eminent, and the notables. He invested him with the royal robes of honour, crowned him with a diadem studded with jewels, placed a necklace and bracelets on him, girded him with a sword, and tied for him two banners with his own hand, one of them of silver according to the custom of amīrs, and the other of gold according to the custom of heirs apparent; and this second banner had not been tied for anyone before him among those of his rank. He gave him the title Tāj al-Millah, added to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. He wrote a covenant for him, and the covenant was read in his presence, which was not the custom; rather, covenants used to be handed to the governors in the presence of the caliphs, and when a man among them took it, he would say to him: "This is my covenant to you, so act according to it." He mounted him on a horse with a golden saddle and led before him another with a saddle like it. He went out and sat in the ṭayyār to his residence, and the next day he sat in the robes of honour and the crown upon the throne for congratulation. He ordered the distribution of twenty thousand dirhams in alms, and they were distributed among all the religious communities. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ sent him many rare gifts, so he sent five hundred camels, and he carried fifty thousand thousand dinars and a thousand thousand dirhams and five hundred garments of various kinds and thirty Chinese trays of silver containing ambergris, musk, and perfume. The arrival of great floods at Sāmarrāʾ and the rising of the Tigris In the month of Ramaḍān, the great floods arrived at Sāmarrāʾ, and the dam of al-Sahliyyah was breached. The rise of the Tigris reached its height until it attained twenty-one cubits. A breach burst forth at al-Ẓāhir on the eastern side, flooding houses and streets. A breach burst from the moat, flooding the cemeteries of Bāb al-Tibn and Qaṭīʿat Umm Jaʿfar. The inhabitants of the houses bordering the Tigris left them, and the water sank from its wells and drains. People ransomed their own lives in fear of the drowning of the entire city, then the water receded. An earthquake at Sīrāf On Sunday, the seventh of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, there was an earthquake at Sīrāf that demolished the houses and destroyed the wealth in them, and more than two hundred people perished in it. The death of the Qarmaṭī ruler of Hajar It is reported that the news reached al-Kūfah in Ṣafar of the death of Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf b. al-Ḥasan al-Jannābī, the Qarmaṭī, ruler of Hajar, so the markets of al-Kūfah were closed for three days. A battle between al-ʿAzīz and Aftakīn Among the events that occurred in this year was the battle that took place between al-ʿAzīz b. al-Muʿizz the Fāṭimid and Aftakīn, the ghulām of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, the ruler of Damascus. He defeated him and took him captive, and brought him with him to the lands of Egypt honoured and esteemed, as was mentioned earlier. Al-ʿAzīz took possession of Damascus and its districts.
