✧ Mention of the return of Abu al-Maʿālī b. Sayf al-Dawlah to the kingship of Aleppo In this year, Abu al-Maʿālī Sharīf b. Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān returned to the kingship of Aleppo. The reason for this was that when Qarghawayh seized control of it, he expelled his master Abu al-Maʿālī from it (as we mentioned in the year 357 AH). Abu al-Maʿālī then went to his mother in Mayyāfāriqīn. Then he came to Ḥamāh, which belonged to him, and settled there. The Byzantines had destroyed Ḥimṣ and its districts, as has also been mentioned. Yārqatāsh, a mawlā of his father, who was in the fortress of Barzūyah, went down to him, served him, and rebuilt the city of Ḥimṣ for him, so its inhabitants became numerous. Qarghawayh had appointed as his deputy in Aleppo a mawlā of his named Bakjūr. Bakjūr grew strong and his affairs became formidable; he arrested his master Qarghawayh and imprisoned him in the citadel of Aleppo, and he remained there for about six years. Then those in Aleppo among Qarghawayh's followers wrote to Abu al-Maʿālī b. Sayf al-Dawlah, urging him to aim for Aleppo and take possession of it. He marched to it, besieged it for four months, and took possession of it. The citadel remained in the hands of Bakjūr. Envoys went back and forth between them, and he agreed to surrender it on condition that he be granted safety for himself, his family, and his property, and that he be appointed over Ḥimṣ. Bakjūr requested that the leading men of Banū Kilāb attend this guarantee and covenant. Abu al-Maʿālī did so, brought them for the guarantee and covenant, and Bakjūr surrendered the citadel of Aleppo to Abu al-Maʿālī. Bakjūr then went to Ḥimṣ and governed it on behalf of Abu al-Maʿālī. He devoted his efforts to its development and the protection of the roads, so its prosperity increased and good things abounded in it. Then he moved from it to the governorship of Damascus, as we shall mention in the year 376 AH.
