Translation

✧ Mention of the situation of Bakhtiyār after the seizing of the Turks When Bakhtiyār did what we have mentioned of seizing the Turks, he came upon a store of Azādrawīh at Jundīsābūr and took it. Then he saw what the Turks had done with Subuktikīn, and that some of them in the Sawād of al-Ahwāz had rebelled against him, and his ghulāms who were in his house became disturbed, and the elders of the Turks from al-Baṣrah came to him and reproached him for what he had done to them. The wise men of the Daylam said to him: 'We must have the Turks in war to defend us with arrows.' So Bakhtiyār's judgment became confused. Then he released Azādrawīh and made him commander of the army in place of Subuktikīn, thinking that the Turks would be friendly with him. He released the prisoners and went to his mother and brothers at Wāsiṭ, and wrote to his uncle Rukn al-Dawlah and to his cousin ʿAḍud al-Dawlah asking them to aid him and relieve what had befallen him. He wrote to Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān asking him to help him in person, and that if he did so, he would remit the money that was owed by him. He sent to ʿImrān b. Shāhīn in al-Baṭīḥah robes of honor and remitted the remainder of the money on which they had agreed, and he proposed marriage to one of his daughters, and asked him to send an army to him. As for his uncle Rukn al-Dawlah, he equipped an army with his vizier Abū al-Fatḥ b. al-ʿAmīd, and wrote to his son ʿAḍud al-Dawlah commanding him to march to his uncle and join with Ibn al-ʿAmīd. As for ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, he promised to march, but he waited for calamities to befall Bakhtiyār, out of desire for the kingdom of Iraq. As for ʿImrān b. Shāhīn, he said: 'As for the remission of the money, we know that it has no foundation, and I have accepted it. As for the marriage tie, I will not marry anyone unless the proposal comes from me, and the Alids have proposed to me, and they are our masters, yet I have not answered them to that. As for the robes of honor and the horse, I am not one to wear your clothing, and my son has accepted them. As for sending an army, my men will not feel at ease with you because of how many of you they have killed.' Then he mentioned how Bakhtiyār and his father had treated him time after time, and said: 'And despite this, he will inevitably need to enter my house seeking my protection, and by God, I will treat him in the opposite manner to how he and his father treated me.' And so it happened. As for Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān, he responded by hastening, and he sent his brother Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān to Takrīt with an army, and he waited for the Turks to descend from Baghdādh. If they overcame Bakhtiyār, he would enter Baghdādh as its master. When the Turks descended from Baghdādh, Abū Taghlib marched to it in order to establish a proof against Bakhtiyār in the remission of the money he owed, and he reached Baghdādh while the people were in great affliction with the ʿayyārūn, and he protected the city and restrained the people of corruption. As for the Turks, they descended with Subuktikīn to Wāsiṭ, and they took with them the caliph al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh, and al-Muṭīʿ also, who was deposed. When they reached Dayr al-ʿĀqūl, al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh died there, and Subuktikīn fell ill and also died there. They were both carried to Baghdādh. The Turks put forward over them al-Fatkīn, who was one of their chief commanders and a mawlā of Muʿizz al-Dawlah. Bakhtiyār rejoiced at the death of Subuktikīn, and he thought that the affair of the Turks would dissolve and scatter with his death, but when he saw the orderliness of their affairs, that grieved him. Then the Turks marched against him while he was at Wāsiṭ, and they camped near him, and they fought him in turns for about fifty days. The war between the Turks and Bakhtiyār continued without interruption, and the victory was with the Turks in all of that. They besieged Bakhtiyār, and the siege became severe upon him, and they surrounded him, and he became fearful and watchful. He continued sending messengers to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah urging and hastening, and he wrote to him: 'If I am to be eaten, then be you my eater, Otherwise, rescue me before I am torn apart.' When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah saw that, and that the matter with Bakhtiyār had reached what he had hoped for, he marched toward Iraq ostensibly to aid him, but inwardly for the opposite of that.
