✧ Mention of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's taking possession of ʿUmān In this year, the vizier Abū al-Qāsim al-Muṭahhar b. Muḥammad, the vizier of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, took control of the mountains of ʿUmān and the Shurāh who were in them, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal. The reason for this was that when Muʿizz al-Dawlah died, Abū al-Faraj b. al-ʿAbbās, the deputy of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, was in ʿUmān and left it. Then ʿUmar b. Nahbān al-Ṭāʾī took charge of its affairs and proclaimed the daʿwah for ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. Then the Zanj gained control over the town, and with them were groups of soldiers, and they killed Ibn Nahbān and appointed over themselves a man known as Ibn Ḥallāj. So ʿAḍud al-Dawlah dispatched an army from Kirmān and appointed over them Abū Ḥarb Ṭughān. They traveled by sea to ʿUmān, and Abū Ḥarb went out from the ship to the land, and the ships sailed in the sea from that place. They met at Ṣuḥār, the chief town of ʿUmān. The soldiers and the Zanj came out against them and they fought a severe battle on land and sea. Abū Ḥarb was victorious and took possession of Ṣuḥār, and its people were defeated. That was in the year 362 [and 300]. Then the Zanj gathered at Barīm, which is a rural district between it and Ṣuḥār two stages. Abū Ḥarb marched against them and inflicted a defeat upon them that destroyed them by killing and captivity, and the lands became tranquil. Then many of the Shurāh gathered in the mountains of ʿUmān and appointed over themselves an amir named Ward b. Ziyād, and they appointed for themselves a caliph named Ḥafṣ b. Rāshid. Their strength grew intense, so ʿAḍud al-Dawlah dispatched al-Muṭahhar b. ʿAbd Allāh by sea as well. He reached the districts of Ḥarfān in the dependencies of ʿUmān and inflicted a defeat upon its people, making great slaughter among them and taking captives. Then he marched to Damā, which is four days from Ṣuḥār, and fought those in it and inflicted a great defeat upon them there and captured many of their leaders. Their amir Ward and their imam Ḥafṣ fled, and al-Muṭahhar pursued them to Nazwā, which is the chief town of those mountains, and they fled from him. He sent armies against them, and they inflicted a defeat upon them that destroyed the rest of them. Ward was killed, and Ḥafṣ fled to Yemen and became a teacher. Al-Muṭahhar marched to a place known as al-Sharaf, where there was a large gathering of Arabs, about ten thousand, and he inflicted a defeat upon them. The lands became stable and submitted to obedience, and no dissenter remained in them.
