Then the year 363 AH began
ذِكْرُ وِلَايَةِ رَيَّانَ الْخَادِمِ دِمَشْقَ لَمَّا كَانَ بِدِمَشْقَ مَا ذَكَرْنَاهُ مِنَ الْقِتَالِ، وَالتَّحْرِيقِ، وَالتَّخْرِيبِ، وَصَلَ الْخَبَرُ بِذَلِكَ إِلَى الْمُعِزِّ صَاحِبِ مِصْرَ، فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ وَاسْتَبْشَعَهُ وَاسْتَعْظَمَهُ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى الْقَائِدِ رَيَّانَ الْخَادِمِ، وَالِي طَرَابُلُسَ، وَيَأْمُرُهُ بِالْمَسِيرِ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ لِمُشَاهَدَةِ حَالِهَا وَكَشْفِ أُمُورِ أَهْلِهَا، ( وَتَعْرِيفِهِ حَقِيقَةَ الْأَمْرِ )، وَأَنْ يَصْرِفَ الْقَائِدَ أَبَا مَحْمُودٍ عَنْهَا، فَامْتَثَلَ رَيَّانُ ذَلِكَ، وَسَارَ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ، وَكَشَفَ الْأَمْرُ فِيهَا وَكَتَبَ بِهِ إِلَى الْمُعِزِّ، وَتَقَدَّمَ إِلَى الْقَائِدِ أَبِي مَحْمُودٍ بِالِانْصِرَافِ عَنْهَا، فَسَارَ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ مِنَ الْعَسْكَرِ إِلَى الرَّمْلَةِ، وَبَقِيَ الْأَكْثَرُ مِنْهُمْ مَعَ رَيَّانَ. وَبَقِيَ الْأَمْرُ كَذَلِكَ إِلَى أَنْ وَلِيَ الْفَتْكِينُ، عَلَى مَا نَذْكُرُهُ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the governorship of Rayyān the Eunuch over Damascus When there occurred in Damascus what we have mentioned of fighting, burning, and destruction, news of that reached al-Muʿizz, the ruler of Egypt, and he condemned it, found it abhorrent, and considered it grave. He sent to the commander Rayyān the Eunuch, governor of Tripoli, ordering him to proceed to Damascus to observe its condition, to investigate the affairs of its people, (and to inform him of the true state of the matter), and to remove the commander Abū Maḥmūd from it. Rayyān complied with that, proceeded to Damascus, investigated the matter there, and wrote about it to al-Muʿizz. He ordered the commander Abū Maḥmūd to depart from it, so he went with a small group of the army to al-Ramlah, while most of them remained with Rayyān. The matter remained thus until al-Fatkīn assumed authority, as we shall mention.
