Translation

✧ Mention of the governorship of Jaysh b. al-Ṣamṣāmah over Damascus Then the strife returned in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year four and sixty and three hundred, and they wavered over reconciliation. The matter was settled between the commander Abū Maḥmūd and the Damascenes on expelling Ẓālim from the city, and that Jaysh b. al-Ṣamṣāmah should govern it, he being the son of Abū Maḥmūd's sister. They agreed on that, and Ẓālim departed the city, and Jaysh b. al-Ṣamṣāmah governed it, and the strife subsided and the people were at ease. Then after some days the Maghāribah wrought havoc and caused corruption at the Bāb al-Farādīs, so the people rose against them and fought them, and killed those they overtook. They went to the palace where Jaysh was, and he fled from it, he and those with him of the Maghribī troops, and joined the army. On the morrow, which was the first of Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year, Jaysh advanced with the army against the city, and its people fought him, and he defeated them and routed them, and burned of the city what had remained intact. Fighting between them continued for many days, and the people were distressed and afraid. The dwellings were ruined, supplies were cut off, roads were blocked, buying and selling ceased, and water was cut off from the city, so the canals and bathhouses became idle. Many of the poor died in the streets of hunger and cold. Then relief came to them with the dismissal of Abū Maḥmūd.
