Translation

✧ Son of Luʾayy Luʾayy: with ḍammah on the lām, and it is hamzated and may be softened. There is difference of opinion regarding what it is derived from, according to several statements: One of them: that it is a diminutive of laʾy, and there is difference of opinion regarding what laʾy is. Ibn al-Anbārī, along with a group including Abū Dharr al-Khushanī, said: al-laʾy is the wild bull. Abū Ḥanīfah said: al-laʾy is the cow. He said: I heard a Bedouin say: "How much is this cow of yours?" Al-Suhaylī said: al-laʾy is slowness, with ḍammah on the bāʾ, hamzated, the opposite of deliberateness and avoidance of haste. The second: that it is derived from liwāʾ al-jaysh (the banner of the army). The third: that it is derived from liwā al-raml al-maqṣūr (the curved sand dune). Both of these were stated by Ibn Durayd. His kunyah is Abū Kaʿb. The mother of Luʾayy is ʿĀtikah bt. Yakhlud b. al-Naḍr b. Kinānah, and she is the first of the ʿAwātik who gave birth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Quraysh. He had two brothers: one of them is Taym al-Adram, and al-daram is a deficiency in the chin; it is said that he was lacking in the beard. The other is Qays, and none of them remains. The last of them to die was in the time of Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī, and his inheritance remained, with no one knowing who was entitled to it. It is said that their mother was Salmā bt. ʿAmr b. Rabīʿah, who is Luḥayy b. Ḥārithah al-Khuzāʿī. (Yakhlud: with fatḥah on the yāʾ, which has two dots beneath it, and sukūn on the dotted khāʾ, and after the lām an undotted dāl).
