✧ [The children of Luʾayy and their mothers] Ibn Isḥāq said: Luʾayy b. Ghālib begot four individuals: Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy, Sāmah b. Luʾayy, and ʿAwf b. Luʾayy. The mother of Kaʿb, ʿĀmir, and Sāmah was Māwiyyah bt. Kaʿb b. al-Qayn b. Jasr, of Quḍāʿah. Ibn Hishām said: And it is said: And al-Ḥārith b. Luʾayy; they are Jusham b. al-Ḥārith, among Hizzān of Rabīʿah. Jarīr said: : Banū Jusham, you are not of Hizzān, so claim descent To the highest hilltops from Luʾayy b. Ghālib And do not give your women in marriage among the people of Ḍawr Nor among Shukays—evil is the lodging of strangers. And Saʿd b. Luʾayy; they are Bunānah: among Shaybān b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿUkābah b. Ṣaʿb b. ʿAlī b. Bakr b. Wāʾil, of Rabīʿah. And Bunānah was a wet-nurse of theirs from Banū al-Qayn b. Jasr b. Shayʿ Allāh—and it is said Sayʿ Allāh b. al-Asad b. Wabarah b. Thaʿlabah b. Ḥulwān b. ʿImrān b. al-Ḥāf b. Quḍāʿah. And it is said: a daughter of al-Namir b. Qāsiṭ, of Rabīʿah. And it is said: a daughter of Jarm b. Rabbān b. Ḥulwān b. ʿImrān b. al-Ḥāf b. Quḍāʿah. And Khuzaymah b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib; they are ʿĀʾidhah among Shaybān b. Thaʿlabah. And ʿĀʾidhah was a woman from Yemen, and she is the mother of Banū ʿUbayd b. Khuzaymah b. Luʾayy. The mother of all the sons of Luʾayy except ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy was Māwiyyah bt. Kaʿb b. al-Qayn b. Jasr. And the mother of ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy was Makhshiyyah bt. Shaybān b. Muḥārib b. Fihr; and it is said: Laylā bt. Shaybān b. Muḥārib b. Fihr. The affair of Sāmah [His journey to ʿUmān and his death] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for Sāmah b. Luʾayy, he went out to ʿUmān, and he was there. They claim that ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy expelled him, because there was something between them and Sāmah gouged out ʿĀmir's eye, so ʿĀmir frightened him, and he departed to ʿUmān. They claim that while Sāmah b. Luʾayy was riding on his she-camel, she lowered her head to graze, and a snake seized her lip and pressed her down until the she-camel fell on her side; then it bit Sāmah and killed him. Sāmah said, when he sensed death, as they claim: : O my eye, weep for Sāmah b. Luʾayy; The serpent has clung to Sāmah's leg. I see none like Sāmah b. Luʾayy On the day they left him, slain by his she-camel. Convey to ʿĀmir and Kaʿb a message: My soul is full of longing for them. Even if my abode is in ʿUmān, I am A Ghālibī; I departed without a she-camel. Many a cup you spilled, O son of Luʾayy, In fear of death—it need not have been spilled. You sought to ward off the fates, O son of Luʾayy; Whoever seeks that has no power against fate. And a wine-jar of the night-journey you left ruined After good fortune, grandmother, and swiftness. Ibn Hishām said: It reached me that some of his descendants came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and traced their lineage to Sāmah b. Luʾayy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The poet?" One of his companions said to him: "As if you, O Messenger of Allah, meant his saying: : Many a cup you spilled, O son of Luʾayy, In fear of death—it need not have been spilled. He said: "Yes." The affair of ʿAwf b. Luʾayy and its transmission [The reason for his attachment to Banū Dhubyān] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for ʿAwf b. Luʾayy, he went out—as they claim—in a caravan of Quraysh, until when he was in the land of Ghaṭafān b. Saʿd b. Qays b. ʿAylān, he was delayed, and those of his people who were with him departed. Then Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd came to him, and he is his brother in the lineage of Banū Dhubyān—Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ b. Rayth b. Ghaṭafān. And ʿAwf b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ b. Rayth b. Ghaṭafān—so he detained him, married him, adopted him, and made him a brother. Thus his lineage became widespread among Banū Dhubyān. And Thaʿlabah—as they claim—is the one who said to ʿAwf when he was delayed and his people left him: : Hold back for me, O son of Luʾayy, your camel; The people have left you, and you have no dwelling. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr—or Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥuṣayn—related to me that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "If I were to claim any living tribe of the Arabs, or attach them to us, I would claim Banū Murrah b. ʿAwf. We recognize among them the resemblances, along with what we know of the place where that man came to rest—meaning ʿAwf b. Luʾayy." }
