Then the year 361 AH began

✧ Mention of the journey of al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh al-ʿAlawī from the west to Egypt In this year al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh al-ʿAlawī traveled from Ifrīqiya (heading for the Egyptian lands). His journey began at the end of Shawwāl in the year 361 AH. His first departure was from al-Manṣūriyya. He stayed in Sardāniya, a village near al-Qayrawān, where his men, his governors, his household, and all the wealth, goods, and other things he had in his palace joined him, to the point that dinars were cast and made into the shape of millstones, and every two millstones were loaded on a camel. He departed from there and appointed over the lands of Ifrīqiya Yūsuf Bulukkīn b. Zīrī b. Manād al-Ṣinhājī al-Ḥimyarī, except that he did not give him authority over the island of Sicily, nor over the city of Tripoli of the West, nor over Ajdābiya, nor over Surt. He appointed over Sicily Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī al-Ḥusayn, as we have previously mentioned, and over Tripoli ʿAbd Allāh b. Yakhluf al-Kutāmī, who was a favorite of his, and over the collection of revenues in Ifrīqiya Ziyādat Allāh b. Ziyād b. al-Qadīm, and over the land tax ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Khurāsānī and Ḥusayn b. Khalaf al-Mūṣidī, and he ordered them to submit to Yūsuf b. Zīrī. He stayed in Sardāniya for four months until he had completed everything he wanted. Then he departed from there, accompanied by Yūsuf Bulukkīn, whom he was advising on what to do. We will mention what is needed concerning the ancestry of Yūsuf Bulukkīn and his family. Yūsuf was sent back to his duties, and he traveled to Tripoli with his armies and retainers. There, a group of his soldiers fled from him to the mountains of Nafūsa, and he sought them but could not catch them. Then he traveled to Egypt. When he reached Barqa, accompanied by Muḥammad b. Hāniʾ the Andalusian poet, the latter was assassinated. He was found thrown on the seashore, murdered, and no one knew who killed him. His killing took place at the end of Rajab in the year 362 AH. He was one of the excellent poets, but he went to extremes in praising al-Muʿizz until the scholars declared him an infidel. Among that is his saying: What you will, not what the fates will; so decree, for you are the One, the Subduer, and his saying: How long I have jostled around his stirrup with Gabriel! Among that also is what is attributed to him, though I did not find it in his dīwān, his saying: The Messiah has alighted at Raqqāda; Adam and Noah have alighted there; God, the Lord of lofty attributes, has alighted there, so all else besides Him is wind. Raqqāda is the name of a city near al-Qayrawān. There is more besides this, and those who are partisan to him interpreted it, but God knows best. In sum, he exceeded the limits of praise. Then al-Muʿizz traveled until he reached Alexandria at the end of Shaʿbān of that year. The people of Egypt and its notables came to him, and he met them, honored them, and treated them well. He proceeded and entered Cairo on the fifth of Ramaḍān in the year 362 AH, and he quartered his troops in Egypt and Cairo in the houses, while many of them remained in tents. As for Yūsuf Bulukkīn, when he returned from bidding farewell to al-Muʿizz, he stayed in al-Manṣūriyya, concluding appointments for the governors over the provinces. Then he traveled through the lands, attended to the affairs personally, and put people's minds at ease. The people of Bāghāya rose against his governor and fought him, defeating him. Yūsuf sent an army against them, but it fought them and could not overcome them. He sent word to Yūsuf informing him of the situation, so Yūsuf prepared and gathered troops to march against them. While he was making ready, news reached him from Tāhart that its people had rebelled, opposed him, and expelled his governor. He set out for Tāhart, fought it, prevailed over its people, and destroyed it. While there, news came to him that the Zanāta had camped at Tilimsān. He marched against them, and they fled from him. He stayed at Tilimsān and besieged it for a while; then they surrendered to his judgment, and he pardoned them, except that he transferred them to the city of Ashīr, where they built a city they named Tilimsān. Then, between Ziyādat Allāh b. al-Qudaym and another governor who was with him, named ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad the secretary, a rivalry developed that turned into war. Each of them gathered a group, and there were several battles between them on multiple occasions. Yūsuf Bulukkīn inclined toward ʿAbd Allāh because of an old companionship between them. Then Abū ʿAbd Allāh seized Ibn al-Qudaym and imprisoned him, and took sole control of affairs after him. Ibn al-Qudaym remained imprisoned until al-Muʿizz died in Egypt, and the authority of Yūsuf Bulukkīn was strengthened. In the year 364 [and three hundred] AH, Khalaf b. Ḥusayn went up to an impregnable fortress, where a great many Berbers and others gathered to him. He was one of the supporters of Ibn al-Qudaym. Yūsuf heard of that, marched against him, encamped before the fortress, and fought him. Several men were killed on both sides. He captured it, and Khalaf b. Ḥusayn fled. Many of those inside were killed, and he sent seven thousand of their heads to al-Qayrawān. Then Khalaf was captured; orders were given concerning him, and he was paraded on a camel, then crucified, and his head was sent to Egypt. When the people of Bāghāya heard of that, they became afraid, made peace with Yūsuf, and submitted to his judgment. He expelled them from Bāghāya and demolished its wall.
