Translation

✧ Mention of the strife in Baghdad In this year, a great strife occurred in Baghdad, and they displayed excessive partisanship. The people divided into factions, and the ʿayyārūn appeared and spread corruption, seizing people's wealth. The cause of what we have mentioned was the incitement of the common people to the raid. They gathered and became numerous, and among them arose various groups: the Banawiyya, the fitān, the Sunnis, the Shia, and the ʿayyārūn. Consequently, wealth was looted, men were killed, and houses were set ablaze. Among what was burned was the district of al-Karkh, which was a center of merchants and Shia. Because of this, strife and enmity arose between the Naqīb Abū Aḥmad al-Mūsawī and the vizier Abū al-Faḍl al-Shīrāzī. Then Bakhtiyār sent to al-Muṭīʿ lillāh, requesting money from him to spend on the raid. Al-Muṭīʿ replied: "The raid and its expenses, along with other affairs of the Muslims, are incumbent upon me if the world is in my hands and revenues are collected for me. But as for my current situation, none of that is incumbent upon me. Rather, it is incumbent upon the one who holds the lands. I have nothing but the khuṭba. If you wish, I will withdraw." Messages went back and forth between them until it escalated to threats. Al-Muṭīʿ lillāh then paid four hundred thousand dirhams, for which he had to sell his clothes, the furnishings of his house, and other things. It became widely known among the people, including the Iraqis and the pilgrims of Khurasan and others, that the caliph had been subjected to ṣādara (forced exaction). When Bakhtiyār received the money, he spent it on his own affairs, and the talk of the raid came to nothing.
