Translation
✧ Ibn Kilāb Kilāb: with kasrah on the kāf and lightening of the lām, a transferred noun. In one view, which he transmitted from the collective, there are two aspects: one of them is what al-Suhaylī mentioned: either from the verbal noun which has the meaning of mutual attack, like “I attacked the enemy, attacking and kilāban,” or from al-kilāb, the plural of kalb (dog), because they intend abundance, as they named with Sibāʿ and Anmār. The second is what he transmitted in “al-Mawrid” and “al-Fatḥ” from some of them: that he was a lover of hunting, devoted to it with dogs, and he gathered many of them, so when he passed by dogs among a people, it was said: “These are the dogs of Ibn Murrah.” So it remained as a nickname for him. He is given the kunyah Abū Zuhrah, and the mother of Kilāb is Hind bt. Surayr b. Thaʿlabah al-Ḥārith b. Fihr b. Mālik, and he had two brothers from his father but not from his mother, and they are Taym and Yaqaẓah. Their mother is Asmāʾ bt. Jāriyah al-Bāriqiyyah, and it is said: Yaqaẓah is from Hind bt. Surayr, the mother of Kilāb. (Yaqaẓah with the yāʾ having two dots beneath it, and with fatḥah on the qāf and the dotted ẓāʾ). And it is said: Taym is from Hind bt. Surayr, the mother of Kilāb.
