Translation
✧ Kilāb begot two sons: Quṣayy b. Kilāb and Zuhrah b. Kilāb. Their mother was Fāṭimah bt. Saʿd b. Sayal, one of the Jadarah from Juʿthumah al-Asad of Yemen, allies of the Banū al-Duʾil b. Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah. Concerning her father, the poet says: We see not among the people a single person, of those we know, like Saʿd b. Sayal— a horseman, firm-gripping, in whom there is hardship; and when he faces the adversary, he dismounts. A horseman who lures the horses on, just as the free-born Qaṭāmī lures the partridge. Al-Suhaylī said: Sayal was his name; he was Khayr b. Ḥamālah, and he was the first for whom swords were gilded with gold and silver. Ibn Isḥāq said: They were called the Jadarah only because ʿĀmir b. ʿAmr b. Khuzaymah b. Juʿthumah married the daughter of al-Ḥārith b. Muḍāḍ al-Jurhumī. At that time Jurhum were the custodians of the House, and he built a wall (jidār) for the Kaʿbah, so ʿĀmir was called al-Jādir on that account, and his descendants were called the Jadarah for that reason. [The rest of Kilāb’s children] Ibn Hishām said: And Nuʿm bt. Kilāb—she was the mother of Asʿad and Suʿayd, the two sons of Sahm b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy. Their mother was Fāṭimah bt. Saʿd b. Sayal.
