the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others
Translation
✧ The account of a prostitute from the Children of Israel: From al-Ḥasan, who said: There was a prostitute woman who possessed a third of all beauty and would not make herself available except for a hundred dinars. A worshipper saw her and was captivated by her. So he went and worked with his own hands and toiled until he gathered a hundred dinars. Then he came and said: "You have captivated me, so I went and worked with my own hands and toiled until I gathered a hundred dinars." She said: "Hand it over to the steward so that he may count and weigh it." He did so. She said: "Have I received from him a hundred dinars?" He said: "Yes." She said: "Enter." She had such beauty and form as only Allah knows, and she had an adorned room and a couch of gold. She said: "Come to me." When he sat with her in the manner of a man about to betray, he remembered his standing before Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Trembling seized him and his desire died. He said: "Let me leave, and the hundred dinars are yours." She said: "What has come over you? You saw me, as you claimed, and were captivated by me, so you went and toiled and labored until you gathered a hundred dinars. Now that you have gained power over me, you do what you have done." He said: "Fear of Allah and my standing before Him. You have become hateful to me." She said: "If you are truthful, I have no husband other than you." He said: "Let me go out." She said: "No, not unless you make a covenant with me that you will marry me." He said: "No, not until I leave." She said: "Release yourself. I would love for you to marry me." He said: "Perhaps." Then he wrapped himself in his garment and departed to his own town. The other woman set out with her worldly goods, regretful for what she had done, until she came to his town. She asked about his name and dwelling, and was guided to him. He was told: "The queen has come asking about you." When he saw her, he gasped one gasp and died. It fell into her hands, and she said: "As for this one, he has escaped me. Does he have any relative?" It was said: "His brother, who is poor." He came, and she said: "I will marry you out of love for your brother." So she married him, and she bore him seven sons. The account of another prostitute: From ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb, who said: Ibrāhīm said: I think it is only from his father: A worshipper among the worshippers of the Children of Israel used to devote himself to worship in his cell. A group of dissolute men came to a prostitute and said to her: "Perhaps you can lead him astray." So she came to him on a dark night and called out to him. He looked out at her, and she said: "O servant of Allah, give me shelter with you. Do you not see the darkness and the rain?" She kept at him until he sheltered her. She lay down near him and began to show him the beauties of her face until his soul called him to her. He said: "No, by Allah, not until I see how you endure the fire." He went to the lamp and placed one of his fingers in it until it burned. Then he returned to his prayer. His soul called him again, and he returned to the lamp and placed his other finger in it until it burned. His soul kept calling him, and he kept returning to the lamp, until all his fingers were burned while she was watching. Then the woman grew weak and died.
