Translation

✧ DHŪ AL-RIJL: Dāwūd b. Abī al-Riyād, from his father, who said: There was a monk who devoted himself to worship in a hermitage. He looked out from it and saw a woman, and he was tempted by her. He put his leg out of the hermitage to descend to her. When he put his leg out, divine protection descended upon him and felicity overtook him, and he said: "O soul of a leg that went out of the hermitage to disobey God—shall it return to it and be with me in my hermitage? By God, this will never be." He said: So he left it hanging outside the hermitage; snows and rains fell upon it, and the sun and winds struck it until it was severed, disintegrated, and fell. Then he thanked God for that deed of his, and He revealed in some of the scriptures: "And the one of the leg," praising him for that.
