the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others
Translation
✧ The ḥadīth of ʿAfīf among them concerning acts of disobedience: From Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Balkhī: There was among the Children of Israel a young man, never was a young man seen more handsome than he, and he used to sell baskets. While he was going around one day with his baskets, a woman came out of the house of one of the kings of the Children of Israel. When she saw him, she returned hastily and said to the king’s daughter: O so-and-so, I have seen a young man selling baskets; I have never seen anything more handsome than him. She said: Bring him in. So she went out to him and said: O young man, enter, that we may buy from you. He entered, and she locked the door behind him, then said: Enter. He entered, and she locked another door behind him. Then the king’s daughter came toward him, unveiling her face and her bosom. He said to her: Buy, may Allah grant you well-being. She said: We have not called you for this; we called you only for such-and-such—meaning to solicit him for herself. He said to her: Fear Allah. She said to him: If you do not comply with what I want, I will inform the king that you entered upon me trying to force yourself on me. He said: But he refused and admonished her, yet she refused. He said: Prepare for me water for ablution. She said: On me be your sandals; O servant girl, prepare for him water for ablution at the top of the pavilion, a place from which he cannot flee, and from the pavilion to the ground is forty cubits. When he reached the top of the pavilion, he said: O Allah, I have been invited to an act of disobedience, and I choose to harm myself and cast it from this pavilion rather than commit disobedience. Then he said: In the name of Allah, and he threw himself from the top of the pavilion. So Allah sent down an angel for him, and the angel took him by his upper arm, and he landed standing on his feet. When he reached the ground, he said: O Allah, if You will, provide me with sustenance that would make me independent of these baskets. He said: So Allah sent upon him locusts of gold, and he took from them until he filled his garment. When it was in his garment, he said: O Allah, if this is sustenance You have provided me in this world, then bless me in it; and if it diminishes what I have with You in the Hereafter, then I have no need of it. So it was proclaimed: Indeed, this which We have given you is one part of twenty-five parts, for your patience in casting yourself from this pavilion. He said: O Allah, I have no need of anything that diminishes what is with You in the Hereafter. He said: So it was taken up.
