ذِكْرُ أَخْبَارِ خُرَاسَانَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ سَارَ مَرْدَاوِيجُ مِنَ الرَّيِّ إِلَى جُرْجَانَ، وَبِهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُظَفَّرِ مَرِيضًا، فَلَمَّا قَصَدَهُ مَرْدَاوِيجُ عَادَ إِلَى نَيْسَابُورَ، وَكَانَ السَّعِيدُ نَصْرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بِنَيْسَابُورَ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَهَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُظَفَّرِ سَارَ السَّعِيدُ نَحْوَ جُرْجَانَ، وَكَاتَبَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَلْغَمِيُّ ( مُطَرِّفَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَزِيرَ مَرْدَاوِيجَ، وَاسْتَمَالَهُ، فَمَالَ إِلَيْهِ، فَانْتَهَى الْخَبَرُ بِذَلِكَ إِلَى مَرْدَاوِيجَ، فَقَبَضَ عَلَى مُطَرِّفٍ وَقَتَلَهُ. وَأَرْسَلَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَلْغَمِيُّ ) إِلَى مَرْدَاوِيجَ يَقُولُ لَهُ: أَنَا أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ لَا تَسْتَحْسِنُ كُفْرَ مَا يَفْعَلُهُ مَعَكَ الْأَمِيرُ السَّعِيدُ، وَأَنَّكَ إِنَّمَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى قَصْدِ جُرْجَانَ وَزِيرُكَ مُطَرِّفٌ لِيَرَى أَهْلُهَا مَحَلَّهُ مِنْكَ، كَمَا فَعَلَهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ كَاتِبُ عَمْرِو بْنِ اللَّيْثِ، حَمَلَ عَمْرًا عَلَى قَصْدِ بَلْخَ لِيُشَاهِدَ أَهْلُهَا مَنْزِلَتَهُ مِنْ عَمْرٍو، فَكَانَ مِنْهُ مَا بَلَغَكَ، وَأَنَا لَا أَرَى مُنَاصَبَةَ مَلِكٍ يُطِيفُ بِهِ مِائَةُ أَلْفِ رَجُلٍ مِنْ غِلْمَانِهِ وَمَوَالِيهِ وَمَوَالِي أَبِيهِ، وَالصَّوَابُ أَنَّكَ تَتْرُكُ جُرْجَانَ لَهُ، وَتَبْذُلُ عَنِ الرَّيِّ مَالًا تُصَالِحُهُ عَلَيْهِ، فَفَعَلَ مَرْدَاوِيجُ ذَلِكَ، وَعَادَ عَنْ جُرْجَانَ، وَبَذَلَ عَنِ الرَّيِّ مَالًا، وَعَادَ إِلَيْهَا، وَصَالَحَهُ السَّعِيدُ عَلَيْهَا.
Translation
✧ Account of the news of Khurasan In this year Mardawij marched from al-Rayy to Jurjan, where Abu Bakr Muhammad b. al-Muzaffar was ill. When Mardawij made for him, he returned to Naysabur, and al-Sa'id Nasr b. Ahmad was in Naysabur. When Muhammad b. al-Muzaffar reached it, al-Sa'id set out towards Jurjan, and Muhammad b. 'Ubayd Allah al-Balghami wrote to (Mutarrif b. Muhammad, the vizier of Mardawij, and won him over, so he inclined to him. News of that reached Mardawij, and he seized Mutarrif and killed him. And Muhammad b. 'Ubayd Allah al-Balghami) sent to Mardawij saying to him: I know that you do not approve of the ingratitude of what the amir al-Sa'id does with you, and that what prompted you to aim for Jurjan was only your vizier Mutarrif, so that its people might see his standing with you, just as Ahmad b. Abi Rabi'ah, the secretary of 'Amr b. al-Layth, did: he prompted 'Amr to aim for Balkh so that its people might witness his rank with 'Amr, and from it came what reached you. I do not think it right to oppose a king around whom a hundred thousand men of his pages, clients, and the clients of his father gather. The right course is that you leave Jurjan to him, and offer money for al-Rayy with which you make peace. So Mardawij did that, and turned back from Jurjan, offered money for al-Rayy, returned to it, and al-Sa'id made peace with him over it.
