Translation

✧ Mention of the governorship of Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar over Khurasan When al-Saʿīd had finished the affair of Jurjān and made it firm, he appointed Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar b. Muḥtāj over the armies of Khurasan, and returned to him the management of affairs in all the districts of Khurasan, and he returned to Bukhārā, the seat of his might and the throne of his kingdom. The cause of the advancement of Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar was that one day he was with al-Saʿīd, conversing with him privately about some of his important matters, when a scorpion stung him on one of his legs several times, yet he did not move, and no trace of that appeared upon him. When he had finished his talk and Muḥammad returned to his dwelling, he took off his boot and saw the scorpion, so he seized it. The news of that reached al-Saʿīd, and he was astonished by it. He said: "I marvel at nothing except the composure of your mind in managing what I said to you. Why did you not get up and remove it?" He replied: "I would not cut off the emir's conversation because of a scorpion. If I cannot endure a scorpion's sting in your presence, how could I endure, when far from you, the edges of the swords of the enemies of your state, when I repel them from your kingdom?" So his standing became great with him, and he gave him two hundred thousand dirhams.
