Translation

✧ Mention of Washmakīr's arrival at his brother Mardāwīj In this year Mardāwīj sent to his brother Washmakīr, who was in the lands of Jīlān, summoning him to him. The messenger was Ibn al-Jaʿd. He said: Mardāwīj sent me, and commanded me to employ gentleness in bringing out his brother Washmakīr to him. When I arrived, I asked about him, and I was directed to him, and there he was with a group sowing rice. (When they saw me, they made for me), barefoot and naked, wearing trousers of colored rags and torn cloaks. I greeted him, conveyed to him the message of his brother, and informed him of what he had acquired of lands, wealth, and other things. He blew a raspberry with his mouth into his brother's beard and said: 'He has donned black and served the wearers of black,' meaning the caliphs of the Banū al-ʿAbbās. I kept tempting him and arousing his desire until he went out with me. When we reached Qazwīn, I exerted myself to make him wear black, but he refused. Then he wore it after much effort. He said: I saw of his ignorance things I am ashamed to mention. Then fortune gave him what was held for him in the unseen, and he became one of the most knowledgeable of kings in the administration of kingdoms and the governance of subjects. And there attended one who argued on behalf of Mardāwīj b. Ziyād al-Daylamī, and sought that a fixed tribute be agreed upon for the districts of the east over which he had prevailed. So he wrote for him his covenant and sent him a banner and a robe of honor.
