✧ Confirmation of the estrangement between Muʾnis and al-Muqtadir In the year three hundred and nineteen, in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, the estrangement between Muʾnis and al-Muqtadir was renewed, until it led to the killing of al-Muqtadir. Its cause was what we have mentioned first in more than one place. When it was now, Muʾnis learned that the vizier al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim had agreed with a group of military commanders to plot against him, so Muʾnis became wary of him. Al-Ḥusayn learned that Muʾnis had become wary of him and that he intended to raid his house at night and seize him, so he moved about in several places, and he would not attend his house except in the morning. Then he moved to the caliphal palace. Muʾnis requested from al-Muqtadir the dismissal of al-Ḥusayn and his confiscation, and he agreed to his dismissal but did not confiscate from him. He ordered al-Ḥusayn to keep to his house, but Muʾnis was not satisfied with that (so he remained in his vizierate). Al-Ḥusayn impressed upon al-Muqtadir that Muʾnis wanted to take his son Abū al-ʿAbbās, who is al-Rāḍī, from his house in al-Muḥarram and travel with him to Syria and pledge allegiance to him. So al-Muqtadir returned him to the caliphal palace. Abū al-ʿAbbās learned of that, and when the caliphate came to him, he did to al-Ḥusayn what we shall mention. Al-Ḥusayn wrote to Hārūn, who was at Dayr al-ʿĀqūl, after his defeat by Mardāwīj, to summon him to Baghdādh. He wrote to Muḥammad b. Yāqūt, who was at al-Ahwāz, ordering him to hasten to Baghdādh. Muʾnis's apprehension increased, and it became clear to him that al-Ḥusayn was striving to plot against him.
