✧ Dismissal of al-Kalwadhānī and the Vizierate of al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim In the year three hundred and nineteen, Abū al-Qāsim al-Kalwadhānī was dismissed from the vizierate of the caliph, and al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Sulaymān b. Wahb became vizier. The reason for that was that there was in Baghdādh a man known as al-Dāniyālī, and he was a forger, clever and cunning. He used to age paper and write on it in his own hand what resembled ancient script, and he would mention in it indications and symbols in which he embedded the names of people from the men of the state, and he would gain thereby much profit. Among the things he did was that he placed in a book: Mīm Mīm Mīm, meaning such-and-such will happen from it, and he brought it to Mufliḥ and said: 'This is an allusion to you, for you are Mufliḥ, the client of al-Muqtadir,' and he mentioned to him signs that pointed to him, and he enriched him. Then al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim got in touch with him, until he made his name in a book that he forged and aged, and he mentioned in it the sign of his face and what was in it of marks, and he said that he would become vizier for the eighteenth caliph of the caliphs of the Banū al-ʿAbbās, and that affairs would be set aright at his hands, and he would subdue the enemies, and the world would flourish in his days. He made all this in a book in which he mentioned events that had already occurred and things that had not yet occurred, and he attributed that to Daniel, and he aged the book and took it and read it to Mufliḥ. When Mufliḥ saw that, he took the book and brought it to al-Muqtadir, and said to him: 'Do you know among the secretaries anyone who matches this description?' He said: 'I know none but al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim.' He said: 'You have spoken truly, and my heart inclines to him. If a messenger comes to you from him with a note, present it to me, and keep his situation secret and do not inform anyone of his affair.' Mufliḥ went out to al-Dāniyālī and asked him: 'Do you know any of the secretaries who matches this description?' He said: 'I know no one.' He said: 'Then how did this book reach you?' He said: 'From my father, and he inherited it from his forefathers, and it is from the prophecies of Daniel, ﷺ.' He reported that back to al-Muqtadir, and he accepted it. Then al-Dāniyālī informed al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim of that, and when he told him, he wrote a note to Mufliḥ, and he conveyed it to al-Muqtadir, and he promised him good, and he ordered him to seek the vizierate and to win over Muʾnis the servant. That was one of the greatest reasons for his vizierate, despite the many who disliked him. Then it happened that al-Kalwadhānī made an accounting of what was needed of expenditures, and on it was the signature of the officials of the dīwān, and there remained a need of seven hundred thousand dinars, and he presented it to al-Muqtadir and said: 'There is no source for this except what the Commander of the Faithful releases for me to spend.' That weighed heavily on al-Muqtadir. And al-Ḥusayn b. al-Qāsim, when that reached him, wrote undertaking to guarantee all the expenditures and not to demand anything from the public treasury, and he guaranteed that he would extract in addition a thousand thousand dinars to be in the treasury. His note was presented to al-Kalwadhānī, and he asked to be relieved, and permission was given for the vizierate of al-Ḥusayn. Al-Ḥusayn went to Bulayq and guaranteed him money so that the heart of Muʾnis would be favorable to him, and he did so. Al-Kalwadhānī was dismissed in Ramaḍān, and al-Ḥusayn assumed the vizierate when two nights remained of Ramaḍān as well. The tenure of al-Kalwadhānī was two months and three days. The Banū al-Barīdī and Ibn Qurābah attached themselves to al-Ḥusayn, and he stipulated that ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā should not be involved with him, and that was granted. He then began to arrange his removal from Baghdādh, and that was granted, and he was sent out to al-Ṣāfiyah.
