✧ (The wars between the Muslims and the Romans) In the year 319 AH, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Thamal, governor of Ṭarsūs, raided the land of the Romans. He crossed a river, and snow fell upon them up to the chests of the horses. A large gathering of Romans came to them, and they met them in battle, and Allah granted victory to the Muslims. They killed six hundred of the Romans, captured about three thousand, and gained much booty of gold, silver, silk brocade, and other things. In this year, in Rajab, Thamal returned to Ṭarsūs and entered the land of the Romans with a summer expedition in a large gathering of cavalry and infantry. They reached ʿAmmūriyyah, and many Romans had gathered there, but they left it when they heard news of Thamal. The Muslims entered it and found in it much goods and food, so they took it and burned what they had built there, and they went deep into the land of the Romans, plundering, killing, and destroying, until they reached Ankara — which is now called Ancyra — and returned safely, having encountered no stratagem. The value of the captives reached one hundred thousand dinars and thirty-six thousand dinars, and their arrival at Ṭarsūs was at the end of Ramaḍān. In this year, Ibn al-Dayrānī and others of the Armenians, who were on the borders of Armenia, corresponded with the Romans and urged them to aim for the lands of Islam, promising them support. The Romans marched in a great multitude, destroyed Bazkarā and the lands of Khilāṭ and what bordered them, and many Muslims were killed and many captured. Their news reached Mufliḥ, the servant of Yūsuf b. Abī al-Sāj, who was governor of Adharbayjān. He marched with a large army, and many volunteers followed him to Armenia, arriving there in Ramaḍān. He aimed for the land of Ibn al-Dayrānī and those who agreed with him in fighting him, killed his people, and plundered their wealth. Ibn al-Dayrānī fortified himself in a fortress of his. The people exaggerated in the large number of those killed among the Armenians, until it was said that they were a hundred thousand killed, and Allah knows best. The armies of the Romans marched to Sumaysāṭ and besieged it. Its people sought help from Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān, as al-Muqtadir had appointed him over Mosul and Diyār Rabīʿah, on the condition that he raid the Romans and rescue Malaṭyah from them. Its people had grown weak, so they made peace with the Romans and handed over the keys of the town to them, and they ruled over the Muslims. When the messenger of the people of Sumaysāṭ came to Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān, he prepared and marched to them swiftly. He arrived when the Romans were about to open it, and when he approached them, they fled from him. Then he marched from there to Malaṭyah, where there was a group of Romans and the army of Malīḥ the Armenian, along with Bunnī b. Nafīs, an associate of al-Muqtadir, who had become a Christian and was with the Romans. When they sensed the approach of Saʿīd, they left it, fearing that he would come with his army from outside the town and its people would rise against them, and they would perish, so they departed. Saʿīd entered it, then appointed a commander over it and returned from there. He entered the land of the Romans as a raider in Shawwāl, sending ahead two detachments that killed many Romans before his entry into it.
