Translation

✧ The destruction of the infantrymen In the year three hundred and eighteen, in Muḥarram, the infantrymen were destroyed, and they were expelled from Baghdādh after their evil had become great, and their power had strengthened. The reason for that was that when they restored al-Muqtadir to the caliphate, as we have mentioned, their presumptuousness and arrogance increased, and they began to say things that caliphs do not tolerate. Among them, they would say: "Whoever helps an oppressor, God gives the oppressor power over him," and "Whoever brings a donkey up to the roof can bring it down," and "If al-Muqtadir does not do for us what we deserve, we will fight him as he deserves," and other such things. Their turbulence and their demands increased, and they enrolled their children, their families, and their acquaintances in the stipends, and they registered their names, so that they received one hundred and thirty thousand dinars per month. It happened that the cavalry rioted demanding their stipends, and it was said to them: "The treasury is empty, and the funds have gone to the infantrymen." So the cavalry rose against them, and they fought, and a group of the cavalrymen was killed, and al-Muqtadir used their killing as an argument against the infantrymen, and he ordered Muḥammad b. Yāqūt, who had been appointed over the police, to ride, and he drove the infantrymen away from the palace of al-Muqtadir, and it was proclaimed among them that they must leave Baghdādh, and whoever remained would be arrested and imprisoned. The houses of their leaders were demolished, and their properties were confiscated. After the proclamation, a group of them was seized, and he beat them, shaved their beards, and paraded them in disgrace. The blacks rose up in solidarity with the infantrymen, so Muḥammad also rode with the chamberlains, and he fell upon them, and burned their dwellings, in which a great number of them, their children, and their women were burned. So they went out to Wāsiṭ, and a large group of them gathered there, and they took control of it, and they expelled the caliph's governor. Then Muʾnis marched against them, and he fell upon them, and inflicted great slaughter among them, and after that no banner was raised for them.
