Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Ḥafṣ, Abū ʿAmr al-Jabrī: The shaykh of Naysābūr in his era in leadership, probity, wealth, and ḥadīth. He heard Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ, Isḥāq b. Manṣūr, Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, Abū Zurʿah, and Abū Ḥātim among a great many others. He died on the sixth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. Aḥmad b. Mahdī b. Rustam: He transmitted a great deal of ḥadīth. From Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī al-Ḥāfiẓ, who said: I heard Abū Muḥammad b. Ḥayyān say: Aḥmad b. Mahdī possessed great wealth, about three hundred thousand dirhams, and he spent all of it on knowledge. He mentioned that no bed was known to be his for forty years. Ibn Ḥayyān said: I heard Abū ʿAlī Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm say: Aḥmad b. Mahdī said: A woman came to me in Baghdad one night and mentioned that she was from a good family and had been afflicted with a trial. She said: "I ask you by Allah to cover me." I said: "What is your trial?" She said: "I was forced against myself while I am pregnant, and I told people that you are my husband and that my pregnancy is from you, so do not expose me. Cover me, may Allah, Mighty and Majestic, cover you." He remained silent about her and she left. I did not notice until she had given birth. The imam of the district came with a group of neighbors to congratulate me on the child. I showed them joy, and on the second day I weighed out two dinars and gave them to the imam, saying: "Give this to that woman to spend on the newborn, for what separated me from her has already passed." I used to give her two dinars every month through the imam, saying "This is the maintenance of the newborn," until two years passed. Then the newborn died and people came to console me, and I showed them submission and contentment. The woman came to me one night a month later with those dinars that I had been sending to her through the imam. She returned them and said: "May Allah, Mighty and Majestic, cover you as you covered me." I said: "These dinars were a gift from me to the newborn, and they are yours; do with them as you wish." Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm, mawlā of Bakr b. Muḍar b. al-Nuʿmān, known as Abū Aḥmad: He was among the warriors and had well-known stations against the Byzantines. He died in Rajab of this year. Badr b. al-Haytham b. Khalaf b. Khālid b. Rāshid b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. al-Nuʿmān, Abū al-Qāsim al-Lakhmī al-Qāḍī al-Kūfī: He settled in Baghdad and transmitted ḥadīth there from Abū Kurayb and others. Ibn Shāhīn and Yūsuf al-Qawwās narrated from him. He was trustworthy, one of the long-lived. He began hearing ḥadīth after forty years of his life had passed. From al-Azharī, who said: Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī mentioned that Badr b. al-Haytham lived one hundred and seventeen years, and he was noble. He met Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl b. Dukayn but did not write from him. He entered upon the vizier ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā, who raised him up and said to him: "How old is the judge?" He said: "I do not know my age, but there was a wonder in Kufa, and I rode with my father in the year 215 AH, and between the two rides was a hundred years." Badr died in Shawwāl of this year and was carried to Kufa and buried there. Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar b. Mujāshiʿ, Abū Muḥammad al-Khuttalī. He transmitted from a group, and Ibn al-Muẓaffar, Abū Bakr b. Shādhān, and Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in this year. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Ḥabīb, Abū Bakr, known as Ibn Abī al-Ṣaʿw al-Ṣaydalānī: He transmitted from Abū Mūsā Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā, Muḥammad b. Manṣūr al-Ṭūsī, and Yaʿqūb al-Dawraqī. Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in this year. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Marzubān b. Sābūr b. Shāhinshāh, Abū al-Qāsim, Ibn Bint Aḥmad b. Manīʿ: Of Baghawī origin, born in Baghdad in the year 213 AH—or it is said 214 AH, in Ramadan, and that is more correct. He saw Abū ʿUbayd but did not hear from him. He heard a portion from Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, but Mūsā b. Hārūn took it from him and threw it into the Tigris, saying: "Do you want to combine in transmission the three: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī?" Al-Baghawī used to say: "I counted the shaykhs from whom no one today transmits except me, and they were eighty-seven shaykhs." From ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin, who said: I heard ʿUmar b. Aḥmad al-Wāʿiẓ say: I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Baghawī say: I read in the handwriting of my grandfather Aḥmad b. Manīʿ: "Abū al-Qāsim, the son of my daughter, was born on Monday in the month of Ramadan in the year 214 AH, and the first ḥadīth he wrote was in the year 225 AH from Isḥāq b. Ismāʿīl al-Ṭālaqānī." Al-Khaṭīb said: Al-Baghawī heard from ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd, Khalaf b. Hishām al-Bazzār, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Ḥārithī, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ Muḥammad b. Ḥayyān al-Baghawī, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿĀʾishah al-Taymī, Abū Naṣr al-Tammār, Dāwūd b. ʿAmr al-Ḍabbī, Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Ḥimmānī, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, Ḥājib b. al-Walīd, Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-Warkānī, Bishr b. al-Walīd al-Qāḍī, Muḥammad b. Ḥassān al-Samtī, Muḥriz b. ʿAwn, Hārūn b. Maʿrūf, Shaybān b. Farrūkh, Suwayd b. Saʿīd, and Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr b. Ḥarb, among others of their like. Those who narrated from him include Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. Ṣāʿid, ʿAlī b. Isḥāq al-Mādarāʾī, ʿAbd al-Bāqī b. Qāniʿ, Ḥabīb b. al-Ḥasan al-Qazzāz, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Jiʿābī, Abū Bakr b. Mālik al-Qaṭīʿī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm al-Zaynabī, Abū Ḥafṣ b. al-Zayyāt, Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar, Abū ʿUmar b. Ḥayyawayh, Abū Bakr b. Shādhān, al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Shāhīn, Abū Ḥafṣ al-Kattānī, and countless others besides these. He was trustworthy, reliable, prolific, discerning, and knowledgeable. From al-Ḥasan b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khallād, who said: "No muḥaddith in Islam is known to have equaled ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Baghawī in the earliness of his audition, for he died in the year 317 AH, and we heard him say: 'Isḥāq b. Ismāʿīl al-Ṭālaqānī narrated to us in the year 225 AH.'" From Abū al-Walīd al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad al-Darbandī, who said: I heard [Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdān b. Aḥmad al-Khaṭīb, the son of the daughter of Aḥmad b. ʿAbdān al-Shīrāzī, say: I heard] my grandfather say: Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī passed by the Nahr Ṭābiq at the gate of a mosque and heard the voice of a mustamlī. He said: "Who is this?" They said: "Ibn Ṣāʿid." He said: "That boy?" They said: "Yes." He said: "By Allah, I will not leave my place until I dictate from here." He climbed the bench and sat. The ḥadīth scholars saw him, arose, and left Ibn Ṣāʿid. Then he said: "Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal al-Shaybānī narrated to us before the muḥaddithūn were born; Ṭālūt b. ʿAbbād narrated to us before the muḥaddithūn were born; Abū Naṣr al-Tammār narrated to us before the muḥaddithūn were born." He dictated sixteen ḥadīths from sixteen shaykhs from whom none in the world narrated except him. From ʿUmar b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Mālik, who said: I asked Mūsā b. Hārūn about Abū al-Qāsim b. Manīʿ. He said: "Trustworthy, truthful. If it were permitted to say of a person 'above trustworthy,' it would be said of him." I said to him: "O Abū ʿImrān, these people speak against him." He said: "They envy him. Ibn Manīʿ says nothing but the truth." From ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Naṣr, who said: I heard Ḥamzah b. Yūsuf say: I heard Abū al-Ḥusayn Muḥammad b. Ghassān say: I heard al-Ardabīlī say: Ibn Abī Ḥātim was asked about Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī: "Does he enter into the Ṣaḥīḥ?" He said: "Yes." Ḥamzah said: I asked Abū Bakr b. ʿAbdān about Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī. He said: "There is no doubt that he enters into the Ṣaḥīḥ." From Ḥamzah b. Muḥammad b. Ṭāhir al-Daqqāq, who said: I heard al-Dāraquṭnī say: "Abū al-Qāsim b. Manīʿ rarely spoke about ḥadīth, but when he spoke, his speech was like a nail in teakwood." Ibn al-Jawzī said: This is the speech of the learned scholars, the authorities, about al-Baghawī. Abū Aḥmad b. ʿAdī spoke against him with the speech of an envious man whose evil intent is not hidden. From Abū Aḥmad ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdī al-Jurjānī, who said: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Baghawī was a copyist at the beginning of his life, copying for his grandfather and his paternal uncle and others. I arrived in Iraq in the year 297 AH, and I saw in his gathering at that time fewer than ten strangers, after his sons asked them repeatedly to attend their father's gathering while he read to them verbatim. The jesters among them used to say: "In the house of Ibn Manīʿ there is a tree that bears Dāwūd b. ʿAmr al-Ḍabbī, from the abundance of what is transmitted from him." I do not know that anyone transmitted from ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd more than he did. One day al-Qāsim al-Muṭarriz heard him say: "ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿAyshī narrated to us," so al-Qāsim said: "By the sanctity of the one who lies!" When he grew old and aged and the companions of the chains died, the people took him up and gathered around him, and he became popular among them. Yet with his popularity and chain, the gathering of Ibn Ṣāʿid was multiple times his gathering. He transmitted things that were rejected against him, and he had a measure of knowledge of ḥadīth and writings. Ibn al-Jawzī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: This speech clearly stems from partisanship. Copying does not harm him, the smallness of the crowd around him does not injure him, the speech of jesters has no effect, and the saying of al-Muṭarriz is outside the speech of the people of knowledge. We have mentioned his story with Ibn Ṣāʿid, and indeed Ibn Ṣāʿid heard from him. As for what was rejected against him, we do not know anyone who ever rejected anything against him except that he once erred in a ḥadīth, then informed them that he had made a mistake. There is no defect in that, for a human being is not free from error. From ʿAbd al-Ghanī b. Saʿīd al-Azdī, who said: I asked Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Naqqāsh: "Do you remember anything that was taken against Ibn Bint Aḥmad b. Manīʿ?" He said to me: "He erred in a ḥadīth from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar. He transmitted it from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, but he had only heard it from Ibrāhīm b. Hāniʾ, from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Warrāq took it up with his tongue and went around to the ḥadīth scholars. This reached Abū al-Qāsim Ibn Bint Aḥmad b. Manīʿ, and one day he came out to us and informed us that he had erred in it, and that he had intended to write 'Ibrāhīm b. Hāniʾ narrated to us,' but his hand passed over it as usual, and he retracted it." Abū Bakr said: "I saw in him brokenness and grief. He was trustworthy, may Allah have mercy on him." From Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī al-Khuṭabī, who said: Abū al-Qāsim b. Manīʿ died on the night of the breaking of the fast in the year 317 AH, and was buried on the day of the breaking of the fast, having completed one hundred years, three years, and one month. Al-Khaṭīb said: He was buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Tibn. Ibn al-Jawzī said: I saw in some transmissions that he died while his hearing, sight, and teeth were sound, and he was having intercourse with his slave women. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Mughīrah, Abū Muḥammad al-Daqqāq: He heard Isḥāq b. [Abī] Isrāʾīl. Abū Bakr b. Shādhān narrated from him. He was trustworthy and reliable. He died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār, Abū al-Faḍl, known as Ibn Abī Saʿd al-Harawī: He came to Baghdad and transmitted there from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī. Ibn al-Muẓaffar narrated from him. He was trustworthy and a ḥāfiẓ. From Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Thābit, who said: I read in the book of Abū al-Qāsim b. al-Thallāj in his handwriting: "Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, known as Ibn [Abī] al-Ḥusayn, was killed along with his brother on Monday, one day before the Day of Tarwiyah, in the Sacred Mosque. Al-Qarmaṭī Ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Jannābī killed them in the year in which al-Qarmaṭī entered Makkah, the year 317 AH." Muḥammad b. Zabbān b. Ḥabīb, Abū Bakr al-Ḥaḍramī: He was born in the year 225 AH and transmitted from Ḥarmalah b. Yaḥyā and others. He was a righteous man, trustworthy, noble, reliable, abstinent, poor, accepting nothing from anyone. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year, may Allah have mercy on him. Among the notable people who died in this year: Aḥmad b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Faraj b. Shuqayr, Abū Bakr al-Naḥwī: He was learned in the school of the Kufans and had writings on it. Al-Kaʿbī al-Mutakallim: He is Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Maḥmūd al-Balkhī al-Kaʿbī, named after Banū Kaʿb. He was one of the shaykhs of the Muʿtazilah, and the Kaʿbiyyah faction among them is attributed to him. Judge Ibn Khallikān said: He was one of the leading theologians, and he had distinctive positions in the science of kalām; among them was his claim that the acts of God—exalted is He—occur without any choice or will on His part. Thus he reported it from him. Yet al-Kaʿbī contradicted the explicit text of the Qur’an in more than one place. God—exalted is He—said: “And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses” [al-Qaṣaṣ: 68]. And He said: “And had your Lord willed, they would not have done it” [al-Anʿām: 112]. And He said: “And had We willed, We would have given every soul its guidance” [al-Sajdah: 13]. And: “And when We intend to destroy a town, We command its affluent ones, but they act defiantly therein; thus the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction” [al-Isrāʾ: 16]—and other such [verses] that are known by necessity through clear reason and transmitted evidence.
