Translation

✧ Mention of several events In the year three hundred and twelve, al-Muqtadir bestowed a robe of honor upon Najāḥ al-Ṭūlūnī and he was appointed governor of Iṣbahān. In it, the envoy of the king of the Rūm arrived with many gifts, accompanied by Abū ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī, and they requested from al-Muqtadir a truce and the confirmation of the ransom. They were granted that after the summer raid. In this year, a robe of honor was bestowed upon Jinnī al-Ṣafwānī after his return from the lands of Egypt. In it, Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān was appointed over the land-tax and war in Nahāwand. In it, the Muslims entered the land of the Rūm, and they plundered, took captives, and returned. In this year, a man appeared between al-Kūfah and Baghdād, claiming that he was Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. A group of Bedouins and rabble believed him in that, and they gathered around him, and his strength grew in Shawwāl. The vizier sent an army against him, and they fought him and defeated him, killing many of his companions, and the rest of them dispersed. This aforementioned claimant is the leader of the Ismāʿīlīs and the first of them. Nāzūk, the deputy of the police, captured three of the companions of al-Ḥallāj: Ḥaydarah, al-Shaʿrānī, and Ibn Manṣūr. He demanded that they recant, but they did not recant, so he struck their necks and crucified them on the eastern side. No one from the people of Iraq performed the pilgrimage in this year because of the great fear of the Qarāmiṭah, may God curse them. Mention of a strange event In this year, there appeared in a house in which al-Muqtadir billāh dwelt a non-Arab man, wearing fine clothes, and beneath them, next to his body, a woolen shirt. With him were a fire-steel, sulfur, an inkwell, pens, a knife, paper, and in a bag, parched barley, sugar, and a long rope of hemp. It is said that he entered with the craftsmen and remained there. He became thirsty, so he went out seeking water and was seized. They brought him before Ibn al-Furāt, who asked him about his condition. He said: 'I will inform no one but the owner of the house.' They treated him gently, but he would not inform him of anything, saying: 'I will inform no one but the owner of the house.' They beat him to make him confess, and he said: 'In the name of God, have you begun with evil?' and he kept repeating this phrase. Then he began to say in Persian: 'nadānam,' which means 'I do not know.' So orders were given concerning him, and he was burned. Ibn al-Furāt reproached Naṣr the chamberlain for this affair, since he was the chamberlain, and the matter became serious before al-Muqtadir. He accused him of having hidden the man in order to kill al-Muqtadir. Naṣr said: 'Why would I kill the Commander of the Faithful when he has raised me from the dust to the Pleiades? Only one who has confiscated his wealth, taken his properties, prolonged his imprisonment these years, and seized his estates would seek to kill him.' Because of this, Ibn al-Furāt had something to say against Naṣr. In the year three hundred and twelve, Farghānah was conquered at the hands of the governor of Khurāsān.
