فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ الْحَرَّانِيِّ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ الْحَرَّانِيِّ : عن عَلِيُّ بْنُ ✧ Those of the notables who died in the year 312 AH. Ibrāhīm b. Khamsh, Abū Isḥāq al-Zāhid al-Naysābūrī Ibrāhīm b. Khamsh, Abū Isḥāq al-Zāhid al-Naysābūrī He heard Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ and others, and he used to preach to the people. From Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, who said: I heard Abū Manṣūr al-Ṣūfī, the grandson of Ibrāhīm’s daughter, say: I heard my grandfather say: Decree laughs at caution, fate laughs at hope, predestination laughs at planning, and apportionment laughs at effort and toil. Isḥāq b. Bunān b. Maʿn, Abū Muḥammad al-Anmāṭī Isḥāq b. Bunān b. Maʿn, Abū Muḥammad al-Anmāṭī: He heard al-Walīd b. Shujāʿ and Isḥāq b. Abī Isrāʾīl, and he was reliable. He died in this year. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣayrafī ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣayrafī: He related from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā b. Ḥammād. ʿAlī b. ʿUmar al-Sukkarī narrated from him, and he was truthful. He died in Rajab of this year. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿUthmān, Abū al-Qāsim, known as Ibn Abī Ḥassān al-Ziyādī ʿUmar b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿUthmān, Abū al-Qāsim, known as Ibn Abī Ḥassān al-Ziyādī: He heard al-Mufaḍḍal b. Ghassān. Ibn al-Muẓaffar and Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him, and he was reliable. He died in this year, and it is said: in the year 314 AH. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Furāt, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Furāt, Abū al-Ḥasan: He served as vizier several times for al-Muqtadir, and he possessed vast wealth exceeding ten million dinars. His revenue reached one million dinars, and he deposited funds with prominent people. There remained in Baghdad no judge, no upright man, and no respectable merchant who did not hold a deposit for Ibn al-Furāt. From ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin, from his father, who said: Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. ʿAyyāsh al-Qāḍī narrated to me: A man whose unemployment had persisted forged letters on behalf of ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Furāt while he was vizier to Abū Zunbūr, governor of Egypt. He went out to him and met him with them, but [Abū Zunbūr] rejected them because of the excessive emphasis in them and became suspicious of the address. He gave the man a small gift and ordered a stipend for him, saying: Take it until I look into your matter. He sent the letters to Ibn al-Furāt. In them was: The man has a close connection and strong tie to the vizier and long-standing service. The letters reached Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Furāt while his companions were before him, so he informed them of that and said: What is the right course? Some of them said: His hand should be cut off for forging on behalf of the vizier. Others said: His thumb should be cut off. Others said: He should be flogged and imprisoned. And others said: His affair should be exposed to Abū Zunbūr so that he would expel him. Ibn al-Furāt said: How far your natures are from what is good! A man who sought intercession through us and endured hardship traveling to Egypt by our influence, and perhaps he could not reach us to obtain our letters, so he lightened our burden by writing for himself—should his lot be disappointment? Then he wrote on the forged letter to Abū Zunbūr: This is my letter, and I do not know for what reason you rejected it, nor for what reason you were suspicious of it. The man’s connection to me is strong, and his cause with me is stronger than what you think. So be generous in your gift to him and continue your kindness to him. After a long time, a man of handsome appearance entered upon him. He began to pray for him, weep, and kiss the ground before him. Ibn al-Furāt did not recognize him, and he said: May God bless you and your wealth. The man said: I am the owner of the forged letter to Abū Zunbūr, which the vizier’s favor made valid—may God reward him and do well by him. Ibn al-Furāt laughed and said: How much did he give you? He said: I received from his own wealth, through installments he arranged for me and transactions he directed me in, twenty thousand dinars. He said: Stay with us, for we shall benefit you with multiples of that. He employed him, and he earned him great wealth. Ibn ʿAyyāsh said: The first thing to unravel from the order of governance that we witnessed was the judiciary, for Ibn al-Furāt debased it and introduced into it people who had no knowledge and no distinguished lineage. Only a few years passed before the vizierate began to decline, and those who were not qualified assumed it, until in the year thirty-something and three hundred it reached the point that Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣbahānī al-Kātib assumed the vizierate of al-Muttaqī. He was in the utmost baseness of honor and vulgarity. I saw a trained monkey whose trainer said to it: Would you like to be a cloth merchant? It said: Yes, and nodded its head. He said: Would you like to be a perfumer? It nodded its head yes, until he said: Would you like to be a vizier? It nodded its head no, and the people laughed. The first thing that debased the judiciary was that Ibn al-Furāt appointed Abū Umayya al-Aḥwaṣ al-Baṣrī to it, for he had been a cloth merchant. Ibn al-Furāt had hidden with him, and from his house he went out to the vizierate, so he appointed him judge. The matter proceeded as we mentioned in the biography of al-Aḥwaṣ in the year 300 AH. We have already mentioned how Ibn al-Furāt was debased, how he was seized, imprisoned, and killed in the events of this year, so we do not repeat it. From Abū al-Qāsim al-Tanūkhī, from his father, who said: One of the scribes informed me: Ibn al-Furāt had been assessed a penalty of one million six hundred thousand dinars, and he paid all of it within sixteen months from the time he was arrested. From ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin al-Tanūkhī, from his father, who said: Abū Muḥammad narrated to me: One of the elder scribes in Baghdad narrated to me from someone who narrated to him that he heard Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Furāt say to Abū Jaʿfar b. Basṭām: Woe to you, Abū Jaʿfar, you have a story about a loaf of bread. He said: My mother was a righteous old woman who accustomed me from the time she gave birth to me to place under the pillow on which I sleep each night a loaf weighing a raṭl. The next day she would give it in charity on my behalf, and I do that to this day. Ibn al-Furāt said: I have never heard anything more astonishing than this. Know that I have had the worst opinion of you because of matters that necessitated that, and I have been thinking for days about seizing you and demanding money from you. For three nights I have seen in my sleep as though I summon you to seize you, and you fight me and resist me. I advance to fight you, and you come out against the one fighting you with a loaf in your hand like a shield, and you ward off arrows with it, and none of them reaches you. I call God to witness that I have given to God, mighty and glorious, what was in my heart against you, and that my opinion of you from now on is the most favorable. So he was relieved. Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥarrānī Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥarrānī: From ʿAlī b. Abī Saʿīd al-Miṣrī, who said: My father narrated to us: Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Ghaffār al-Ribʿī, known as Umm Muḥammad. She was born in Baghdad and was brought to Egypt when she was young. She heard from her father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and her life extended until she passed eighty. She was known as al-Ṣūfiyya because she persisted in wearing wool and slept only in her prayer place without any bedding for over sixty years. Her nephew ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān heard from her. She died in this year. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī al-Khaṭīb Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī al-Khaṭīb: He used to lead the Friday prayer in the congregational mosque in the caliphal palace and the festival prayers at the muṣallā. He died on Saturday, six nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year. Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Bakr al-Azdī al-Wāsiṭī, known as al-Bāghandī Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Bakr al-Azdī al-Wāsiṭī, known as al-Bāghandī: He heard Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Numayr, Abū Bakr and ʿUthmān the two sons of Shayba, Shaybān b. Farrūkh, ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, and many people from Syria, Egypt, Kufa, Basra, and Baghdad. He traveled in pursuit of hadith to distant regions and devoted great attention to it. He took from the ḥuffāẓ and the imams, and he was a memorizer of understanding. He used to say: I can answer three hundred thousand questions about the hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He settled in Baghdad and narrated there. Al-Maḥāmilī, Ibn Makhlad, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, Daʿlaj, Ibn al-Ṣawwāf, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, Ibn Ḥayyuwayh, Ibn Shāhīn, and many others narrated from him. From Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Thābit [al-Khaṭīb], who said: I heard Hibat Allāh b. al-Ḥasan al-Ṭabarī mention that al-Bāghandī used to recite hadith from memory like the recitation of the Qurʾān. He would say: So-and-so narrated to us, he said so-and-so narrated to us, and so-and-so narrated to us, moving his head until his turban fell off. From al-ʿAtīqī, who said: I heard ʿUmar b. Aḥmad al-Wāʿiẓ say: Abū Bakr al-Bāghandī stood to pray and said the takbīr, then said: Muḥammad b. Sulaymān Luwayn narrated to us. We said subḥān Allāh to him, and he said: In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. Ibn al-Jawzī said: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Khayrūn informed us of a similar story, from Abū Jaʿfar b. Shāhīn, who said: I prayed behind Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Bāghandī. He began the prayer, then said: Muḥammad b. Sulaymān Luwayn narrated to us. It was said to him: Subḥān Allāh. He said: Shaybān b. Farrūkh [al-Ubullī] informed us. They said: Subḥān Allāh. He said: In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. From Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Jumayʿ, Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Shujāʿ narrated to us: We were with Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā al-Jawzī in Baghdad, and al-Bāghandī was with him selecting hadith from him. Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā said to him: You mock me. You have more hadith than I, and you are more knowledgeable and better at memorizing hadith. He said to him: This hadith has become beloved to me. It is enough for you that I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, and I did not say to him: Pray to God for me. Rather I said: O Messenger of God, which is more reliable in hadith, Manṣūr or al-Aʿmash? He said to me: Manṣūr, Manṣūr. From al-Khaṭīb, who said: Nothing blameworthy has been established about al-Bāghandī except tadlīs. I saw all our shaykhs use his hadith as evidence and include it in the ṣaḥīḥ. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Al-Bāghandī engaged in much tadlīs, narrated what he did not hear, and sometimes stole. He died on Friday and was buried on Saturday, ten nights remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year. It has been said: in the year 313, but the first is more correct. Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Ḥājib In this year, in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Ḥājib died. He had been appointed over Mosul, as previously mentioned. Shafīʿ al-Luʾluʾī In this year Shafīʿ al-Luʾluʾī died. He had been in charge of the postal service and other duties, so Shafīʿ al-Muqtadirī took over what Shafīʿ had held.
