✧ The Qarāmiṭah's Entry into Kufa In the year 312, Abū Ṭāhir al-Qarmaṭī entered Kufa. The reason for this was that Abū Ṭāhir released the captives he held from the pilgrims, among them Ibn Ḥamdān and others, and sent to al-Muqtadir demanding Basra and al-Ahwāz, but he was not granted that. So he set out from Hajar intending to attack the pilgrims. Jaʿfar b. Warqāʾ al-Shaybānī was in charge of the districts of Kufa and the road to Makkah. When the pilgrims set out from Baghdad, Jaʿfar marched ahead of them out of fear of Abū Ṭāhir, accompanied by a thousand men from Banū Shaybān. With the pilgrims marched troops of the sultan: Thamil, commander of the sea, Jinnī al-Ṣafwānī, Ṭarīf al-Subkarī, and others, in six thousand men. Abū Ṭāhir al-Qarmaṭī met Jaʿfar al-Shaybānī, and Jaʿfar fought him. While he was fighting him, a group of Qarāmiṭah appeared on his right, and he fled from before them. He met the first caravan, which had already descended from the pass, and turned them back to Kufa, along with the caliph's army. Abū Ṭāhir pursued them to the gate of Kufa and fought them. The caliph's army was routed, and he killed some of them and captured Jinnī al-Ṣafwānī. The rest and the pilgrims fled from Kufa, and Abū Ṭāhir entered it. He stayed six days outside Kufa, entering the city by day and remaining in the mosque until night, then leaving to spend the night in his camp. He carried off from it what he could of wealth, clothing, and other things, and returned to Hajar. The defeated entered Baghdad, and al-Muqtadir ordered Muʾnis al-Muẓaffar to march to Kufa. He spent a million dinars on his expedition there, so he set out to it. He reached it after the Qarāmiṭah had already left it. He appointed Yāqūt as his deputy over it, and Muʾnis marched to Wāsiṭ fearing for it from Abū Ṭāhir. The people of Baghdad were afraid, and people moved to the eastern side one after another.
