Translation
✧ An account of several events In the year 294 AH, Ibn Kayghalagh raided the Byzantines from Tarsus, and he captured from the Byzantines four thousand heads of captives, along with riding beasts and goods. A patrician from among the Byzantine patricians entered under a guarantee of safety and embraced Islam. In it, Ibn Kayghalagh raided and reached Shakand, and God granted him victory, and he marched to al-Layth, and they took as booty about fifty thousand heads, and they inflicted a great slaughter upon the Byzantines, and they returned safely. Andronicus the patrician wrote to al-Muktafī bi-llāh seeking a guarantee of safety from him. He had been in charge of fighting the people of the frontier fortresses on behalf of the Byzantine king. Al-Muktafī granted him what he sought, so he came out with him two hundred Muslim captives who had been in his fortress. The Byzantine king had sent someone to arrest him, so he gave arms to the Muslims and they went out with him, and they seized the one whom the Byzantine king had sent to arrest him at night, and they killed a great many of those with him and took as booty what was in their camp. The Byzantines gathered against Andronicus to fight him, so a group of the Muslims marched to him to deliver him and those with him of the Muslim captives, and they reached Konya. The news reached the Byzantines, so they turned away from him, and a party of that army marched to Andronicus while he was in his fortress, so he came out with his family and his wealth to them, and he marched with them to Baghdad, and the Muslims destroyed Konya. Then the Byzantine king sent to the Caliph al-Muktafī requesting an exchange of prisoners. In it there was a battle between al-Ḥusayn b. Ḥamdān and Bedouin Arabs from among Banū Kalb, Ṭayyiʾ, al-Yaman, Asad, and others. In it the Bedouin Arabs of Ṭayyiʾ besieged Waṣīf b. Ṣuwārtikīn at Fayd, and al-Muktafī had dispatched him as commander of the pilgrimage season. They besieged him for three days, then he came out and fought them, killing some of them. Then the Bedouin Arabs were defeated, and Waṣīf departed with those who were with him. Al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Hāshimī led the people in the pilgrimage this year. In it a man appeared in Syria claiming that he was the Sufyānī, so he was seized and sent to Baghdad, and he claimed that he was mentally disturbed. In this year a comet appeared from the direction of the west, and the rains were so abundant that dwellings were flooded, and the assembly hall known as al-Tāj on the Tigris at the Ḥasanī palace was completed with seven nights remaining of Shaʿbān.
