Marwān, Abū ʿAlī, known as ʿUbayd al-ʿIjlī al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. Ḥātim b. Yazīd b. ʿAlī b. Marwān, Abū ʿAlī, known as ʿUbayd al-ʿIjlī: He was the son of the daughter of Ḥātim b. Maymūn al-Muʿaddal. He heard from many people. Abū Sahl b. Ziyād and Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated from him, and he was trustworthy, a memorizer, and precise. He resided in the qaṭīʿah of ʿĪsā b. ʿAlī al-Hāshimī on the Tigris, and he was among the foremost in the memorization of the musnad in particular. From Ibn ʿAdī, who said: I heard Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Saʿīd say: We used to attend with ʿUbayd at the shaykhs' [sessions] when he was a young man, and he would select [hadiths] for us. When he took the book in his hand, what was in his head flew away, and we would speak to him but he would not answer us. When we left, we said to him: We spoke to you but you did not answer us. He said: When I take the book in my hand, what is in my head flies away, and the hadith of a Companion passes before me, so how can I answer you while I need to think about the musnad of that Companion from its beginning to its end, whether the hadith is in it or not? And if I did not do that, I would fear that I might slip in the selection while you are devils who have sat around me, saying: Why did you select this for us when so-and-so narrated it to us? Or something like that. ʿUbayd died in Ṣafar of this year. Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥabīb Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥabīb, Abū ʿAlī al-Asadī, client of Asad b. Khuzaymah: He was born in al-Kūfah in the year two hundred and ten, and he met the shaykhs in Syria, Egypt, and Khurasan. He moved from Baghdad and settled in Bukhara. He had heard from ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd, Khālid b. Khidāsh, Abū Naṣr al-Tammār, Hudbah, Ibn al-Madīnī, and others. He was truthful, trustworthy, one of the reliable memorizers. He was nicknamed Jazarah, and the reason was that in his youth he read to one of the shaykhs that Abū Umāmah had a bead (kharazah) with which he charmed the sick, and he misread it and said jazarah, hence that [nickname]. He died in Bukhara in this year, and it was said: in the year two hundred and ninety-three. Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh [b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh] b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh [b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh] b. al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Abū ʿAlī al-Hāshimī, known as al-Bayāḍī: Ibn al-Anbārī and Ibn Miqsam narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He was not related to the Banū Bayāḍah, for those are from the Anṣār. He was called al-Bayāḍī only because one day he attended the caliph's assembly, and the people of the assembly wore black, while his clothing was white. The caliph said: Who is that white one (al-bayāḍī)? And that name stuck to him. The Qarmaṭians killed him in this year. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Makhlad, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī, known as Ibn Rāhawayh Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Makhlad, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī, known as Ibn Rāhawayh: He was born in Marw, grew up in Naysābūr, traveled to various lands, and heard from his father, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and the shaykhs. He narrated in Baghdad, and Muḥammad b. Makhlad al-Dūrī, Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī al-Khuṭabī, ʿAbd al-Bāqī b. Qāniʿ, and others narrated from him. He was learned in fiqh, sound in hadith, and excellent in conduct. It is said that he died in Marw, but that is not correct. The correct account is what ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad informed us, with his chain from Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, who said: It was read to Ibn al-Munādī while I was listening. He said: Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh was killed by the Qarmaṭians on his return from the pilgrimage in the year two hundred and ninety-four. We had heard from him when he was in our city. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Abī Isḥāq, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣaffār Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Abī Isḥāq, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Ṣaffār: He heard from Surayj b. Yūnus and others. Al-Dāraquṭnī mentioned him and said: Trustworthy. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan, Abū al-Ḥusayn, companion of al-Narsī Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan, Abū al-Ḥusayn, companion of al-Narsī: Of Khwārizmian origin. He narrated from ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd, Abū Naṣr al-Tammār, Yaḥyā, Aḥmad, Ibn al-Madīnī, and others. His hadith contains some softness. He died in al-Mawṣil in this year. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Faraj, Abū Bakr al-Hamdānī al-Muʿaddal Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Faraj, Abū Bakr al-Hamdānī al-Muʿaddal: He came to Baghdad and narrated there from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿIṣām and others. Jaʿfar al-Khuldī, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, and al-Jaʿābī narrated from him. He was truthful. Muḥammad b. Naṣr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Marwazī the jurist Muḥammad b. Naṣr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Marwazī the jurist: He was born in Baghdad, grew up in Naysābūr, settled in Samarqand, and was the most knowledgeable of people regarding the disagreements of the Companions and those after them in legal rulings. He traveled to the great cities in pursuit of knowledge. He heard from Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā, Ibn Rāhawayh, Hudbah, and many people from Khurasan, Iraq, the Hijaz, Syria, and Egypt. He composed many works. From Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, who said: I heard Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Thaqafī say: I heard my grandfather say: I sat with Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī for four years, and throughout that period I never heard him speak of anything other than knowledge. Al-Ḥākim said: And I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās al-Ḍabbī say: I heard Abū al-Faḍl b. Isḥāq b. Maḥmūd say: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Marwazī, despite his old age, wished that a son be born to him. One day we were with him when a man from his companions came up to him and whispered something in his ear. Abū ʿAbd Allāh raised his hands and said: Praise be to God who has granted me Ismāʿīl in my old age. Then he wiped his face with the inner side of his palms and returned to what he had been doing. We saw that in that single sentence he had applied three sunnahs: one, that he named the child; second, that he praised God Almighty for the gift; third, that he named him Ismāʿīl because he was born in his old age, and God, Mighty and Glorious, has said: "Those are the ones whom God has guided, so follow their guidance" (Q 6:90). Al-Ḥākim said: I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb al-Ḥāfiẓ say: I have not seen anyone with a more beautiful prayer than Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Naṣr. Flies would land on his ear and blood would flow, but he would not brush them away. We used to marvel at the beauty of his prayer, his humility, and his posture in prayer. He would place his chin on his chest and stand erect as if he were a planted piece of wood. From Muḥammad b. Naṣr, who said: I left Egypt with a slave girl of mine and boarded a ship heading for Makkah. I was shipwrecked, and two thousand parts [of books] were lost from me. The slave girl and I ended up on an island, and we saw no one there. Thirst seized me, and I could not find water. I was exhausted, so I laid my head on the slave girl's thigh, surrendering to death. Then a man came to me with a cup. He said: Here. I took it and drank, and gave the slave girl to drink. Then he went away, and I do not know where he came from or where he went. From Aḥmad b. Manṣūr al-Shīrāzī, who said: I heard Aḥmad b. Isḥāq b. Ayyūb al-Faqīh say: I heard Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī say: Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad [al-Sāmānī], the governor of Khurasan, used to give Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī four thousand dirhams every year, and his brother Isḥāq b. Aḥmad gave him four thousand dirhams, and the people of Samarqand gave him four thousand dirhams. He would spend it from year to year without having any dependents. I said to him: Perhaps these people who give to you may change their minds, so why not save something from this for an emergency? He said: Glory be to God! I stayed in Egypt for such-and-such years, and my food, clothing, paper, ink, and everything I spent on myself in a year amounted to twenty dirhams. Do you think that if this goes away, that will not remain? From Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh, who said: I heard the emir Abū Ibrāhīm Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad say: I was in Samarqand, and one day I sat for the redress of grievances, and my brother Isḥāq sat beside me. Then Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī entered, and I stood up for him out of reverence for his knowledge. When he left, my brother Isḥāq reproached me and said: You are the governor of Khurasan, and a man from your subjects enters upon you, and you stand up for him? This is the ruin of governance. I spent that night with my heart divided over that, and I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. It was as if I was standing with my brother Isḥāq when the Prophet ﷺ approached, took hold of my upper arm, and said to me: O Ismāʿīl! May God make firm your rule and the rule of your sons because of your honoring Muḥammad b. Naṣr. Then he turned to Isḥāq and said: The rule of Isḥāq and the rule of his sons has departed because of his belittling Muḥammad b. Naṣr. Muḥammad b. Naṣr settled in Naysābūr after a period, and he was its mufti, and he devoted himself to worship. Then he went to Samarqand and died there in Muḥarram of this year. Mūsā b. Hārūn b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿImrān Mūsā b. Hārūn b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿImrān, whose father was known as al-Jammāl: He was born in the year two hundred and fourteen, and heard Aḥmad [b. Ḥanbal], Yaḥyā [b. Maʿīn], and others. The major hadith scholars and memorizers narrated from him. He was the imam of the people of his age and the most learned of his time in memorization, knowledge of narrators, and precision. He was trustworthy, truthful, extremely scrupulous, and of great dignity. He died in Shaʿbān of this year and was buried in the cemetery of Bāb Ḥarb. From ʿAbd al-Ghanī b. Saʿīd, who said: The best people in speaking about the hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ were ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī in his time, Mūsā b. Hārūn in his time, and ʿAlī b. ʿUmar al-Dāraquṭnī in his time—meaning this Mūsā b. Hārūn whom we are mentioning. Al-Khaṭīb said: I heard most of our shaykhs describe him with great scrupulousness, asceticism, piety, religiosity, excellent conduct, and upright path. And God knows best.
