Translation

✧ An account of several events In the year two hundred and eighty-nine, in the middle of Ramadan, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. al-Muwaffaq was killed. His mother, whenever she asked about him, was told: "He is in the house of al-Muktafī." When al-Muktafī died, she despaired of him, and held a mourning for him. In it there was a battle between the followers of Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad and Ibn Jūstān al-Daylamī in Ṭabaristān, and Ibn Jūstān was defeated. In it Isḥāq al-Farghānī, one of the followers of Badr, joined the desert and openly rebelled against the caliph al-Muktafī. Abū al-Agharr fought him, but Isḥāq defeated him and killed a group of his followers. In it Khāqān al-Mufliḥī was sent to al-Rayy with a large army to take charge of it. In it the people prayed the afternoon prayer in summer shirts in Baghdādh, then a wind blew from the north, the weather turned cold and the cold intensified, until people needed fire and wearing jubbas, and the cold kept increasing until water froze. In it the Tigris rose by about fifteen cubits. In it al-Muktafī bestowed robes of honor on Hilāl b. Badr and others among his father's followers in Jumādā al-Ūlā. In it a violent wind blew in al-Baṣra, uprooting many of its palm trees, and a place there collapsed, in which six thousand souls perished. In Rajab of it the earth quaked with a very great earthquake. In Ramadan, at the time of saḥar, many stars fell from the sky, and the matter continued thus until the sun rose. On the second night of the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, those who had a house or shop at Bāb al-Shammāsiyya were expelled from their house and shop, and were told: "Take your debris and leave." This was because al-Muʿtaḍid had planned to build for himself a house there to live in. He marked out the place of the wall, dug part of it, and began building a dikka on the Tigris. [The Commander of the Faithful] al-Muʿtaḍid had ordered it to be built so that he might move and stay in it until he finished building the house and the palace. Then al-Muʿtaḍid [billāh] fell ill, and rumors spread about him. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muʿtazz said: My heart flew with the wing of throbbing, in fear of the calamities of misfortunes; and in dread that harm might touch the Lion of the kingdom and the sword of wars. He did not cease to be gray-haired while he was a boy of ten, from the dust of wars before gray hair; then experience trained him until no wonder was wonderful to him. The demon of false rumors roamed among us with a tale painful to hearts; and it was as if the people were sheep of a shepherd who was absent from them, and they sensed a wolf. Then the grace of God blew as good tidings, removing from us the veil of distresses; it fell upon us like water on a kindled fire with flames. Lord, accompany him with soundness of body, and grant him from You a spacious life. In this year the pilgrimage with the people was led by al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Malik al-Hāshimī. In it: Ṭayyiʾ, led by Ṣāliḥ b. Mudrik, attacked and plundered the Iraqi caravan, and the pilgrims lost property worth a million mithqāls.]
