Translation
✧ The governorship of Abū al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm over Ifrīqiya We have mentioned in the year two hundred sixty-one that Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad, the emir of Ifrīqiya, had pledged allegiance to his son Abū al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh in the year two hundred eighty-nine, and he died in that year. When his father died, he assumed kingship after him. He was a man of letters, intelligent, brave, one of the renowned knights, along with his knowledge of war and its management. He was wise, learned, and had good insight in disputation. In his days, the affair of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shīʿī grew great. He sent his brother al-Aḥwal—he was not actually cross-eyed; rather he was nicknamed that because when he looked steadily he sometimes lowered his eyelid, so he was nicknamed al-Aḥwal—to fight Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shīʿī. When news of his movement reached him, he went out against them with numerous forces, and they met at Kammūsha. A great number were killed between them, and al-Aḥwal was defeated, except that he remained in opposition to Abū ʿAbd Allāh. Abū al-ʿAbbās, in the days of his father, lived in great fear of him because of his bad character. His father appointed him over Sicily, and he conquered several places there, as we have previously mentioned in the days of his father. When Abū al-ʿAbbās became governor of Ifrīqiya, he wrote to the officials a letter to be read to the common people, promising them benevolence, justice, kindness, and jihād. He fulfilled what he promised of himself, and he summoned a group of scholars to assist him in the affairs of the subjects. He composed poetry. Among that is his saying in Sicily when he had drunk a medicine: I drank the medicine in exile, far from family and home, and when I used to drink medicine I would sweeten it with musk and aloeswood. But now my drink has become the seas of blood and the dust of the clamor and the battlefield. News reached Abū al-ʿAbbās about his son Abū Muḍar Ziyādat Allāh, governor of Sicily, that he was devoted to amusement and addicted to drinking wine. So he dismissed him and appointed Muḥammad b. al-Saraqūsī, and imprisoned his son. On Wednesday night, the last of Shaʿbān in the year two hundred ninety, Abū al-ʿAbbās was killed. Three of his Slavic servants killed him at the instigation of his son, and they carried his head to his son Abū Muḍar while he was in prison. He then killed the servants and crucified them, though it was he who had instigated them. His emirate lasted one year, two months, and fifty-two days. His residence and his killing, may God have mercy on him, were in the city of Tunis. He was very just. He summoned a large group to help him in justice and to inform him of the conditions of the people so that he might act with fairness. He ordered the judge in his city to rule against him and against all his family and his close associates, and the judge did so. When he was killed, his son Abū Muḍar was appointed.
