✧ Reports of the Qarmatians in Syria In the year two hundred and eighty-nine, a man from the Qarmatians appeared in Syria, and he gathered a multitude of Bedouin Arabs and came to Damascus, whose governor was Ṭughj b. Juff, acting on behalf of Hārūn b. Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn. There were battles between them. The beginning of the affair of this Qarmaṭī was that Zikrawayh b. Mahrawayh, whom we mentioned as being the propagandist of this Qarmaṭ, when he saw that the armies of al-Muʿtaḍid were coming in succession against those of the Qarmatians who were in the Sawād of Kufa, and that the killing had exterminated them, he set about seducing the Bedouin Arabs who were near Kufa, namely Asad, Ṭayyiʾ, and others. But no one of them answered him, so he sent his sons to Kalb b. Wabara, and they seduced them, but no one of them answered them except the subtribe known as Banū al-ʿUlayṣ b. Ḍamḍam b. ʿUdayy b. Khubbāb and their clients specifically. So they pledged allegiance in the year two hundred and eighty-nine in the region of al-Samāwa to the son of Zikrawayh, named Yaḥyā, with the kunya Abū al-Qāsim, and they nicknamed him “the Shaykh.” He claimed that he was Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. It is said: Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl had no son named ʿAbd Allāh. He claimed that he had in the lands a hundred thousand followers, and that his she-camel which he rode was under divine command; whenever they followed it in its course, they would be victorious. He showed an arm of his that was defective and mentioned that it was his sign. A group from Banū al-Aṣbagh came to him, and they were called the Fāṭimīs, and they professed his religion. Then Shibl, the page of al-Muʿtaḍid, attacked them from the area of al-Ruṣāfa, but they deceived him and killed him, and they burned the mosque of al-Ruṣāfa. They attacked every village they passed by until they reached the province of Hārūn b. Khumārawayh, which had been farmed out to Ṭughj b. Juff, and they caused much killing there and raiding. Ṭughj fought them, but they defeated him more than once. They killed many of its inhabitants and plundered a great amount of its wealth. Indeed, to God we belong and to Him we return.
