✧ Reports of the Qarmatians in Iraq In the year two hundred and eighty-nine, the Qarmatians spread throughout the Sawād of Kufa. Al-Muʿtaḍid sent against them Shibl, the ghulām of Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ṭāʾī, and he defeated them. He seized a leader of theirs known as Abū al-Fawāris and sent him to al-Muʿtaḍid. He brought him before him and said to him: "Tell me, do you claim that the Spirit of God—exalted be He—and the spirits of His prophets dwell in your bodies, preserving you from error and granting you success in righteous deeds?" He replied: "O you, if the Spirit of God dwells in us, what harm is it to you? And if the spirit of Iblīs dwells, what benefit is it to you? Do not ask about what does not concern you; ask about what pertains to you." He said: "What do you say about what pertains to me?" He replied: "I say that the Messenger of God ﷺ died while your forefather al-ʿAbbās was alive. Did he claim the caliphate, or did any of the Companions pledge allegiance to him for that? Then Abū Bakr died and appointed ʿUmar as successor, while he saw al-ʿAbbās's standing and did not bequeath it to him. Then ʿUmar died and made it a consultative council among six men, and he did not bequeath it to him, nor include him among them. By what do you deserve the caliphate, when the Companions agreed to withhold it from your grandfather?" Al-Muʿtaḍid ordered him to be tortured. His molars were pulled out, his hands were dislocated, then they were cut off along with his legs. Then he was killed and crucified in Baghdad, and his case was made public.
