Translation
✧ In the year two hundred eighty-five, ʿAmr b. al-Layth was appointed over Mā Warāʾ al-Nahr, and Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad was dismissed. In it, there was a yellow wind in al-Kūfah, which remained until sunset, then turned black. The people entreated humbly, then they were rained upon with heavy rain accompanied by terrifying thunder and continuous lightning. Then, after an hour, there fell in a village known as Aḥmadābādh and its surrounding areas white and black stones of different colors, in the middle of which were layers. Some of them were carried to Baghdādh, and the people saw them. In it, Fātik, the client of al-Muʿtaḍid, marched to al-Mawṣil to inspect its affairs and the affairs of al-Jazīrah and the Syrian and Jazīran frontier fortresses, and to set them right, in addition to what he already held of the postal service there. In it, there was a yellow wind in al-Baṣrah, then it turned green, then black, then rains followed such as they had never seen the like of, then large hail fell, the weight of one hailstone being one hundred fifty dirhams according to what was said. In it, al-Khalīl b. Rimāl died at Ḥulwān. In it, al-Muʿtaḍid appointed Muḥammad b. Abī al-Sāj over the provinces of Adhrabayjān and Armīniyyah. He had previously taken control of them and rebelled, and he sent robes of honor to him. In it, Rāghib, the client of al-Muwaffaq, raided by sea and captured many ships. He struck the necks of three thousand Byzantines who were in them, burned the ships, conquered many fortresses, and returned safely with his men. In it, Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh died, and his son Muḥammad took his place in Āmid and what adjoined it, by way of usurpation. So al-Muʿtaḍid marched to Āmid with the armies, accompanied by his son Abū Muḥammad ʿAlī al-Muktafī, in Dhū al-Ḥijjah. He took his route through al-Mawṣil and reached Āmid, besieging it until Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year two hundred eighty-six. He set up mangonels against it. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā sent to request safety for himself, for those with him, and for the people of the town. Al-Muʿtaḍid granted them safety. He came out to him and surrendered the town. Al-Muʿtaḍid bestowed a robe of honor upon him and treated him generously, and demolished its wall. Then it reached him that Muḥammad b. al-Shaykh intended to flee, so he seized him and his family. In it, Hārūn b. Khumārawayh sent to al-Muʿtaḍid to ask him to make a fixed tribute agreement for what was in his hands and the hands of his deputies of Miṣr and al-Shām, to hand over the provinces of Qinnasrīn to al-Muʿtaḍid, and to pay every year four hundred fifty thousand dinars. He agreed to that. He departed from Āmid, leaving his son al-Muktafī as his deputy there, and reached Qinnasrīn and al-ʿAwāṣim, receiving them from Hārūn's men. That was in the year two hundred eighty-six. In it, Ibn al-Ikhshīd raided with the people of Ṭarsūs, and God granted victory at his hands, and he reached Salandū. The pilgrimage was led by Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dāwūd al-Hāshimī. On the tenth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, ʿAlī b. al-Muʿtaḍid entered from al-Rayy. The people met him, and he went in to al-Muʿtaḍid, who said to him: "My son, you went out a child and have returned a brother!" He replied: "O Commander of the Faithful, may God Almighty preserve me for your service, and not preserve me after you." So he ordered that a robe of honor be bestowed upon him in his presence.
