✧ Those of the notables who died in the year two hundred eighty-five AH. Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh. In it died: Aḥmad b. ʿĪsā b. al-Shaykh, the lord of Āmid. After him his son Muḥammad took charge of its affairs. Al-Muʿtaḍid marched against him, and with him was his son Abū Muḥammad ʿAlī al-Muktafī bi-llāh. He besieged him there. He came out to him obedient and compliant, so he received it from him, bestowed robes of honor upon him, honored his family, and treated him well. He appointed his son al-Muktafī as his deputy over it. Then he marched to Qinnasrīn and the ʿAwāṣim and received them by virtue of a letter from Hārūn b. Khumārawayh and his permission for that, and his reconciliation with him over that. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Dabarī. In it died Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Dabarī, the companion of ʿAbd al-Razzāq, in Ṣanʿāʾ. (He was among the last who transmitted from ʿAbd al-Razzāq.) Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Azdī al-Yamānī al-Khawī. In it died Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Azdī al-Yamānī al-Khawī, known as al-Mubarrad. He had taken grammar from Abū ʿUthmān al-Māzinī. Aḥmad b. Aṣram b. Khuzayma b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh. Aḥmad b. Aṣram b. Khuzayma b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥassān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mughaffal, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Muzanī. He heard Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā, and others. From him transmitted Abū Bakr al-Najjād, al-Ḥazmī, and others. He was trustworthy and of great standing. He died [in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year] in Damascus. Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Bashīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Daysam, Abū Isḥāq al-Ḥarbī. Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Bashīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Daysam, Abū Isḥāq al-Ḥarbī. His origin was from Marw. He was born in the year one hundred ninety-eight. He heard Abū Nuʿaym, ʿAffān b. Muslim, [and ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd], and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and many others. From him transmitted Ibn Ṣāʿid, Ibn Abī Dāwūd, Ibn al-Anbārī, and others. He was an imam in knowledge, an extreme in asceticism, knowledgeable in jurisprudence, discerning in legal rulings, skilled in the science of ḥadīth, and a custodian of literature and language. He composed many books. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī was an imam and compiler, knowledgeable in everything, outstanding in every science, truthful. He was compared to Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal in his asceticism, knowledge, and scrupulousness. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī said: My maternal uncles were Christians, and my mother was a Taghlibī woman. I accompanied a group from al-Karkh for listening to ḥadīth, and they called me al-Ḥarbī because according to them whoever crossed the old bridge was from al-Ḥarbiyya. From Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās al-Khazzāz, who said: I heard Abū ʿUmar al-Lughawī say: I heard Thaʿlab say: I did not miss Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī from a gathering of grammar or language for fifty years. From al-Azharī, who said: I heard Abū Saʿd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad al-Istirābādhī say: I heard Abū Aḥmad b. ʿAdī say: I heard Abū ʿImrān al-Ashyab say: A man said to Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī: How were you able to collect these books? He became angry and said: With my flesh and blood, with my flesh and blood!! From Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Māhān, who said: I heard Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq say: The wise men of every nation agree that whoever does not go along with destiny will not enjoy life. As if my shirt were the cleanest shirt and my lower garment the dirtiest lower garment, I never told myself that they should be equal. One heel of mine is cut off and the other is sound. I walk with them and go around all of Baghdad, this side and that side, and I do not tell myself to repair it. I never complained to my mother, nor to my sister, nor to my wife, nor to my daughters about a fever I felt. [And he used to say]: The man is the one who brings his grief upon himself and does not grieve his dependents. I had a migraine for forty-five years and never told anyone about it. For ten years I could see with only one eye and never told anyone about it. I spent thirty years of my life on two loaves of bread: if my mother or sister brought them to me I ate, otherwise I remained hungry and thirsty until the second night. I spent thirty years of my life on one loaf of bread day and night: if my wife or one of my daughters brought it to me I ate, otherwise I remained hungry and thirsty until the other night. Now I eat half a loaf and fourteen dates if they are barnī, or twenty-some if they are daqal. My daughter fell ill, and my wife went and stayed with her for a month. My breakfast during that month cost a dirham and two and a half dāniqs. I entered the bathhouse and bought soap for them for two dāniqs. The expenses of the entire Ramadan were a dirham and four and a half dāniqs. From ʿUmar b. Aḥmad b. Hārūn al-Muqrī, that Abū al-Qāsim [b. Bukayr] narrated to him, saying: I heard Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī say: We did not know anything of these cooked dishes. I used to come from one evening to the next, and my mother had prepared for me a roasted eggplant, or a lick of coffee, or a bunch of radishes. ʿUmar said: I heard Abū ʿAlī al-Kharrāṭ say: I was sitting one day with Ibrāhīm [al-Ḥarbī] at the door of his house. When morning came, he said to me: O Abū ʿAlī, get up to your work, for I have a radish that I ate from last night; I will get up and breakfast on its remains. From Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Sunnī, who said: I heard Abū ʿUthmān al-Rāzī say: A man from the companions of al-Muʿtaḍid came to Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī with ten thousand dirhams from al-Muʿtaḍid, asking him about the matter of the Commander of the Faithful regarding its distribution. He refused it, and the messenger left. Then he returned and said to him: The Commander of the Faithful asks you to distribute it among your neighbors. He said: May God grant you well-being. This is wealth that we did not occupy ourselves with collecting, so we will not occupy ourselves with distributing it. Tell the Commander of the Faithful: either leave us alone or we will move away from your neighborhood. Abū al-Qāsim b. al-Jabalī said: Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī fell ill until he was on the verge of death. I entered upon him one day, and he said to me: O Abū al-Qāsim, I am in a great matter with my daughter. Then he said to her: Get up and go out to your uncle. She went out and cast her veil over her face. Ibrāhīm said: This is your uncle, so speak to him. She said to me: O uncle, we are in a great matter, neither in this world nor in the next. For a month or more we have had no food except dry crusts and salt, and sometimes we lack salt. Yesterday al-Muʿtaḍid sent him with Badr a thousand dinars, and he did not take them. So-and-so and so-and-so sent to him, and he did not take anything from them, while he is ill. Al-Ḥarbī turned to her, smiled, and said: O my little daughter, are you only afraid of poverty? She said: Yes! He said: Look at that corner. She looked, and there were books. He said: There are twelve thousand fascicles of language and rare expressions that I wrote in my own hand. When I die, send one fascicle every day and sell it for a dirham. Whoever has twelve thousand dirhams is not poor. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kātib said: I was one day with al-Mubarrad, and he recited: My body is with me, but the soul is with you; so the body is in exile and the soul is at home. Let people marvel at me that I have a body with no soul in it, and I have a soul with no body. And Thaʿlab recited: They departed, and the body after them became such that the eye perceives no shadow of it. With what face shall I meet them when they see me alive after them? O my shame before them and before their saying: What harm did losing us do to you? He said: Then I came to Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī and recited it to him, and he said: Did you not recite to him: O my shame before those I love, when after parting he says: How did you survive? Al-Ḥasan b. Zakariyyā al-ʿAdawī said: Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī recited to me: I denied my humiliation, but what thing is finer than the humiliation of a lover? Are not my longing, my flowing tears, and my weak body witnesses of my love? From ʿAbd al-Ghaffār b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Urmawī, who said: I heard Abū Yaʿlā al-Ḥāfiẓ say: I heard Ḥamza b. Muḥammad al-ʿUlwī say: I heard ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad al-Ṭawmārī say: We entered upon Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī while he was ill. His water used to be carried to the physician, and the physician used to come to him and treat him. The slave girl came and returned the water and said: The physician has died. He wept and began to say: When the healer dies of illness, the healed is on the verge of dying too. From ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan al-Bazzāz, who said: I heard Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī say, when a group entered to visit him and said: How do you find yourself? He said: I find myself as the poet said: Affliction crept into me, above and below, and I see myself dying limb by limb. My vigor went with the obedience of my self, so I remembered the obedience of God as a worn-out thing. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī died on Monday with nine [nights] remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijja, and was buried on Tuesday with eight remaining of Dhū al-Ḥijja in the year two hundred eighty-five. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb al-Qāḍī prayed over him in the street of Bāb al-Anbār. The crowd was very large, and he was buried in his house. Isḥāq b. al-Maʾmūn b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm. Isḥāq b. al-Maʾmūn b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm, Abū Sahl al-Ṭālaqānī. He transmitted from al-Kawsaj and al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān. From him transmitted Ibn Makhlad. People wrote down from him the book of al-Shāfiʿī through his transmission from al-Rabīʿ, and a fair amount of ḥadīth. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. He was one of the devoted worshippers and among the most reliable traditionists. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said of him: This is a righteous man. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: He is virtuous and trustworthy. From Abū Zurʿa al-Ṭabarī: Abū Yaḥyā al-Nāqid said: I purchased from God Almighty a ḥūrā for four thousand completions of the Qurʾān. When it was the last completion, I heard a call from the ḥūrā saying: You fulfilled your covenant, and here I am, the one you purchased! It is said that he died. Abū Yaḥyā al-Nāqid died on Friday night, [and was buried on Friday] with eight remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Saʿīd b. Muḥammad b. Saʿīd, Abū ʿUthmān al-Anjudānī. Saʿīd b. Muḥammad b. Yūsuf al-Zamī, and others. [From him transmitted Ibn Ṣāʿid, Abū Jaʿfar b. Burayh, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, and others. And] Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī said: The brother of Khaṭṭāb is truthful and does not lie. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Trustworthy. He died in Ramaḍān of this year. Muḥammad b. Ḥammād b. Māhān b. Ziyād, Abū Jaʿfar al-Dabbāgh. Muḥammad b. Ḥammād b. Māhān b. Ziyād, Abū Jaʿfar al-Dabbāgh. He heard ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī and others. He was trustworthy. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhira of this year. Muḥammad b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Akbar, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Azdī al-Thumālī. Muḥammad b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Akbar, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Azdī al-Thumālī—Thumāla is a tribe of al-Azd—known as al-Mubarrad. [He had complete knowledge of language, and he was a marvel in the grammar of the Basrans.] He was born in the year two hundred ten, and it is said: in the year two hundred six. Ibn al-Marzubān mentioned that he was asked: Why were you called al-Mubarrad? He said: The reason for that was that the chief of police sought me for drinking companionship, and I disliked going to him. I entered upon Abū Ḥātim al-Sijistānī, and the messenger of the chief of police came looking for me. Abū Ḥātim said to me: Enter into this—meaning the empty cover of the water jar. I entered it, and he covered its top. Then he went out to the messenger. Abū Ḥātim said to the messenger: He is not with me. He said: I was told that he entered your house. He said: Then enter the house and search it. He entered and went around every place in the house but did not notice the cover of the water jar. Then he left. Abū Ḥātim began clapping his hands and calling out over the water jar: al-Mubarrad, al-Mubarrad! People heard that and adopted it. Al-Mubarrad had complete knowledge of language, and he was unique in the grammar of the Basrans. He transmitted from al-Māzinī, Abū Ḥātim, and others. He was trusted in transmission. There was separation between him and Thaʿlab. From Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, who said: Muḥammad b. al-Marzubān recited to us for one of the companions of al-Mubarrad, praising him: By my soul, you are, O son of Yazīd. Who can compare Thaʿlab to you except a blacksmith? When scholars one day weigh you two, they see your two races as far apart. You explain every difficult matter with skill, while he conceals every clear one with a defect. As if what you dictate is the sun in clarity, and what he dictates is a hamza between two sounds. Al-Mubarrad died in this year. From Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUmar al-Tamīmī, who said: Aḥmad b. Marwān al-Mālikī recited to us, saying: One of our companions recited to me for Thaʿlab about al-Mubarrad when he died: Al-Mubarrad died and his days came to an end, and after al-Mubarrad, Thaʿlab too will pass away. A house of letters half of which has become ruined, and the remaining half will also be ruined. Ibn al-Jawzī said: This is the extent of what has been narrated to us through this chain, and that it is by Thaʿlab. And it has been narrated to us through another chain that it is by al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, known as Ibn al-ʿAllāf, said in mourning al-Mubarrad [and in praise of Thaʿlab, and it is]: Al-Mubarrad died and his days came to an end, and Thaʿlab will surely depart along with al-Mubarrad. A house of letters half of which has become ruined, and the rest of its house will also be ruined. Weep for what time has stripped away, and accustom yourselves to fate for what it will strip away. Al-Mubarrad is gone where you will never hope for him again, and the one you hope for is likewise hidden. The hands of destruction have encompassed you with a calamity, and have threatened an awaited calamity. So take provision from Thaʿlab, for from the cup al-Mubarrad drank, he will soon drink. And I think you should write down his breaths, if breaths are something that can be written. A laggard after him will surely join those who have passed, and he will surely depart, and we shall depart. Al-Mubarrad said: I went out with some companions of mine toward al-Raqqah, and behold, we came upon a large monastery. One of my companions came up to me [and said]: Turn aside with us to this monastery so that we may see who is in it, and praise God, glorified and exalted be He, for the safety He has granted us. When we entered the monastery, we saw madmen in shackles, [and they were] in the utmost filth, and among them was a young man [with the remnants of fine clothes upon him]. When he saw us, he said: Where are you from, young men, may God give you life? We said: From Iraq. He said: May my father be a ransom for Iraq and its people! By God, will you recite poetry to me—or shall I recite to you? Al-Mubarrad said: By God, poetry from this one is indeed elegant. We said: Recite to us. And he began to say: God knows that I am consumed with grief, I cannot disclose what I find. Two spirits are mine: one embraced by a land, and another held by a land. And I think the one who remains is not helped by patience, nor has she strength for it. And I think my absent one is like my present one, in her place she finds what I find. Al-Mubarrad said: [By God], this is indeed elegant. By God, give us more. And he began to say: When they made their camels kneel shortly before dawn, and set them moving, the camels stirred with passion. And she brought out from behind the curtain her gaze, glancing at me while tears of her eyes streamed down. And she bade farewell with fingers of her necklace, bright red, I called out: May your feet never carry you, O camel! Woe to me from separation—what has befallen me and them? Whoever encounters separation, the moment of separation has come, and they departed. O driver of the camels, make haste so that I may bid them farewell, O driver of the camels, in your departure is the appointed term. I have remained true to the covenant, I have not broken my affection for them, would that I knew, after the long covenant, what they have done. [Al-Mubarrad said:] Then one of the hateful men who were with me said: They died! He said: Then should I die? And he said to him: If you wish, [then die]. And he stretched out, leaned against the column to which he was bound, [and died]. We did not leave until we had buried him. [And al-Mubarrad died in this year.] Al-Walīd b. ʿUbayd b. Yaḥyā, Abū ʿUbādah al-Ṭāʾī al-Walīd b. ʿUbayd b. Yaḥyā, Abū ʿUbādah al-Ṭāʾī, al-Buḥturī. From the people of Manbij, where he was born in the year two hundred and six, and where he grew up and was educated. He went out to Iraq and praised al-Mutawakkil and a host of leaders and dignitaries, and he resided in Baghdad for a long time. Then he returned to his hometown and died there. He was eloquent and pure of speech. Al-Mubarrad, Ibn al-Marzubān, and Ibn Durustawayh narrated from him [from] his poetry. And he [followed the manner of Abū Tammām] and would call Abū Tammām the master. It was said to him: People claim that you are a better poet than Abū Tammām. [He said]: By God, this does not benefit me nor harm Abū Tammām.] By God, I have not eaten bread except through him. When Abū Tammām heard his poetry, he said: My soul has been announced dead to me, for my life will not be long since someone like you has arisen for Ṭayyiʾ. And Abū Tammām died after a year. Al-Buḥturī's poetry in praise was better than his elegies. He was asked the reason for that, and he said: We used to compose for hope, and now we compose for fulfillment, and between the two is a great distance. From Ibn al-Buḥturī, he said: My father entered upon one of the tax officials whom he had mentioned in the imprisonment of al-Mutawakkil, [and he was] being pressed for sums of money he could not pay, and he began to say: May I be made your ransom—time is never free from the complained-of accident and the complained-about occurrence. These days are nothing but waystations, some of them spacious and some of them narrow. Calamities have refined you, and it is only that pure gold was refined before you [by smelting]. Is there not in God's prophet Joseph an example for one like you, imprisoned on falsehood and slander? He remained with beautiful patience in prison for a while, and beautiful patience delivered him to kingship. And from his poetry also: Beware, do not remind me of the fever, for its mention is a burning grief for the love-sick, distraught, tormented one. Before that time came the days of Jurhum, and with them the phoenix of the west flew away with that life. O you who blame me for a tear I have shed for separation, and another before it for avoidance, you seek in me a character other than my character and you demand from me a way other than my way. When we parted in grief, and the east of a caravan bound upward departed from the west, I realized that there is no abode after ʿĀlij that pleases, and no friendship after Zaynab. And he also said: Peace be upon you—there is neither loyalty nor covenant. Do you have no alternative to abandoning your friends? O our beloved ones, time has swiftly fulfilled its promise, but no promise from you has been fulfilled for us. O ruins of the abode of al-ʿĀmiriyyah at al-Liwā, may the rains water your dwelling—what has Hind done? May my soul be ransomed for one whose love torments my soul, even though there is no union and no affection from him. A beloved among beloveds whom distance has carried far away, and what beloved does distance not come before? If you cross the desert of al-Ghuwayr heading west, and the plain of al-Sawājīr passes you by, O Saʿd, then tell the Banū l-Ḍaḥḥāk: Take it easy, for I am the deadly viper and the fierce lion. And he also has: If reproach occurs between us and you, or the lands between us and you grow distant, then the burning passion you know remains, and the tears you have known are abundant. [And he also said:] I say to him at our farewell, while each of us is distraught with tears: If our bodies have stayed behind from you, our souls have indeed traveled with you. And he also has: Do you think that attaining glory means that your garments show their beauty and sheen? High rank is not a cloak and its mantle, nor a brocaded robe and its shirt.
