✧ The war between the Kharijites, the people of Mosul, and the Bedouin Arabs In the year two hundred and seventy-nine, the Kharijites—their leader being Harun—together with volunteers from the people of Mosul and others, and Hamdan b. Hamdun al-Taghlibi, gathered to fight Banu Shayban. The reason for this was that a large group of Banu Shayban crossed the Zab and headed for Nineveh in the districts of Mosul to raid it and the town. So Harun al-Shari, Hamdan b. Hamdun, and many volunteers from Mosul and its notables gathered to fight them and repel them. Banu Shayban camped at Baʿshiqa, and with them was Harun b. Sulayman, the mawlā of Ahmad b. ʿIsa b. al-Shaykh al-Shaybani, the lord of Diyar Bakr. Muhammad b. Ishaq b. Kundaj had sent him as governor over Mosul, but its people did not allow him to stay among them and expelled him, so he went to Banu Shayban to help them against the Kharijites and the people of Mosul. They met, formed ranks, and fought. Banu Shayban were defeated, and Hamdan and the Kharijites pursued them, seized their tents, and busied themselves with plunder. When Banu Shayban had crossed the Zab, its waters had risen, so when they were defeated they knew there was no refuge or escape except steadfastness. They returned to the fight while the people were busy plundering, and fell upon them. Many of the people of Mosul and those with them were killed, and victory returned to the Bedouin Arabs. Harun b. Sima wrote to Muhammad b. Ishaq Kundaj informing him that the town would slip from his hand if he did not come in person. So he marched with a dense army toward Mosul. Its people feared him, and some of them went down to Baghdad to request that a governor be sent to them and that Ibn Kundaj be removed from them. On their way they passed through al-Haditha, where Muhammad b. Yahya al-Majruh was guarding the road—al-Muʿtadid had appointed him to that—and a covenant of appointment to the governorship of Mosul had already reached him. They urged him to hasten his march and to reach Mosul before Muhammad b. Kundaj, and they made him fear Ibn Kundaj if he entered Mosul before him. So he marched, and Muhammad reached it first. Muhammad b. Kundaj arrived at Balad, and news reached him that al-Majruh had entered Mosul. He regretted his slowness and wrote to Khumarawayh b. Tulun informing him of the news. Khumarawayh sent Abu ʿAbd Allah b. al-Jassas with many gifts to al-Muʿtadid, requesting several things, among them the governorship of Mosul as it had been his before. He was not granted that, and he was told of the people of Mosul's dislike of his governors, so he turned away from mentioning it. Al-Majruh remained in Mosul for a short while, then al-Muʿtadid dismissed him and appointed after him ʿAli b. Dawud b. Rahzad al-Kurdi. A poet called al-ʿUjayni said: People have never seen, as long as this age has lasted, anything like it. Mosul was so humbled that Kurds were made commanders in it. (al-ʿUjayni, with a nun).
